Admittedly, blue is my favorite color, and it strikes me as especially versatile. Watery blues can create a soothing, spa-like feel, bold tones can be invigorating, and darker shades can be moody but comforting.
For a strong statement, you can incorporate a tile pattern (Image 5) or faux bois (Image 4). The cobalt tile in the first image is stimulating without being harsh, and a judicious use of navy can make a bathroom cozy the way a warmer color would (Images 3 and 7). If you’re feeling color-shy, try a soft aqua (Image 10).

Shaw's Original Fir...
When my sister and I were in college, we decided it was time to redo our shared bathroom in our parents' house, since there was not enough space for two college girls and a teenage boy in there. That, and the cartoon fish wallpaper wasn't cool any more.
We talked my mom into letting us paint the walls of the small bathroom a denim blue, and we installed TONS of white shelving and brought in sand and shells from our beach vacations. Considering it was our first joint venture into home design, we did a great job! And it's still there, 5 years later.
I'd love to know more about #6. Where is that bathroom? Are there more photos? I love the cozy tub feel!
bodicegoddess- Lovely, I'd love to see pictures of that bathroom!
There's just something calming, soothing and well, watery-nice about blue in the bathroom. I don't think it's cliche at all if it's done with class. of course anything can be overdone. These are lovely. I've saved several of ATs blue bathroom scenes before. Thanks for more to add. #10 is my fave.
I like #7, but then again, I really like a neutral grey available from the #7 source: LivingEtc. Does anybody know where I can get LivingEtc paint colors in NYC (they are apparently a UK magazine with a line of paint colors distributed in the UK).
I'm trying to decide on a color for my bathroom and torn between going with a bold deep blue and soothing soft color like the last image. Thanks for the lovely images!
Ms. Pants - Image 6 is from Marie Claire Maison (there is a link for the magazine above). The bathroom is in a "troglodgyte" house - basically carved into rock - in Baza, Spain.
Love the last one! That's very similar to what I want for the guest bath I have demoed right now. You can see our inspiration picture in this post along with a preliminary design board that we have tweaked slightly since then.
Calling AT colorists.... Can anyone recommend a good shade of blue/gray or gray wall color that would work with off-white bathroom tile and off-white trim that has some yellow/cream in it? The walls are a robin's egg blue now that just brings out the yellow in the trim.
What color would do the opposite -- tone down the cream and make all the whites look more crisp and unified?
The white tile has tiny blue-ish specks in it, which is why I 'm thinking blue/gray or gray paint color. The sink, tub, and toilet are all white, which is why I'd like to tone down the cream in the trim -- rather than accentuate it, which is what the current light blue seems to do.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am driving myself nuts trying to figure it out.
(I know, you ask, why not just repaint the trim -- the reason is that there is also a complicated door and closet and other details that are painted in the same off-white and they are painted in an indestructible oil paint. This would all be a big job to paint and prime and I don't think I could make it look as good as it does now. Plus it matches all the doors and trim in the house. In contrast, the wall space is pretty small and would be a cinch to paint, if only I can find the right shade.) Thanks!
I love #1 - I've always wanted a bathroom with rich, deep blue tilework
#1 is my favorite, too, minus the black tile edges. It's convinced me that my next bathroom re-do must be a deep, dark blue!
the medicine cabinet in #8 is beautiful
Even though blue isn't one of my favorite colors, I like an aqua or cobalt blue bathroom.
#9 Am I the only one hating the toilet seat cover being up? If you are going to photograph your bathroom, please make sure the toilet seat cover is down. Yuvk!
I love #8. It inspires me to upgrade my shower curtain.
@DC_Mom: Have you looked at the Farrow and Ball range? They do some lovely, soft greys (parma gray and skylight are blueish). http://www.farrow-ball.com/
