This space is just itching for a makeover, isn't it? Sure, it has some awkward angles and some very orange carpet, but there's potential in this room, and with a bit of creativity it could be amazing. Evidently Bob and Cortney Novogratz thought so, too!

If you follow Ree Drummond's gorgeous blog, The Pioneer Woman, then you've been watching this makeover unfold. Ree needed to turn this attic/storage room in the family's Oklahoma home into a shared space for her daughters, and when Bob and Cortney got wind of the predicament, they flew on down. Ree's daughters' wish list was so humble and sweet, just a place to call their own (i.e. away from their brothers) where they could sleep and knit, and Bob and Cortney delivered. The hanging beds, the wooden desk made in Oklahoma, the textiles, it's all just perfect.

White Enamel Flatwa...
While I generally do not understand AT's love affair with the Novogratz folks, I must confess I love this.
It is shockingly un-Novogratz like. I could go either way on the hanging bed, and I probably would have picked some different carpet tiles, but it is a nice room.
They really excel at kids' rooms. I bet those girls love those hanging beds.
LOVE!
If you're going to do a hanging bed, the attic is the place to do it. I love how those aren't just regular chains and eye hooks. I would caution anyone, though, that those FLOR tiles are very hard to vaccuum. They're like having felt on the floor...every piece of lint and thread sticks to them like glue. Not good for a sewing/knitting room. Believe me, I know from experience.
The room is very sweet! I have also had some very bad Flor tiles that have made their way to goodwill...let someone else try and vacuum them!
Still not feeling the Novogratz love
I love the look of hanging beds (and imagine it would be nice to sleep in) but I would be so afraid to do it myself. I would never be sure they would stay up!
i love pioneer woman!!!! just saw this on her site last night. i also love those designers. although they arent my style for the completed room they usually have something that i adore and want to add to my home...like the jean flag wall hanging.
Oh, I love the Novogratzes! They always throw in something unexpected, and have a nice "loose" look. This is a great room; I am particularly drawn to the turquoise chair, and I know that my daughter would adore the hanging beds!
Having read the post on Pioneer Woman, and having seen more pictures, I absolutely LOVE this project, in every way. This is an absolutely beautiful room; a first look at the pictures does not do the room justice.
Not really feeling it either, sorry. The mockup posted at The Lettered Cottage made much better use of the space (and no, I am not connected to that website in any way).
I agree with tropicalcyclone. The Lettered Cottage did a mockup of this room that totally nailed it, so much so that I started a "bunkhouse" pinboard with beds up against the wall. Made total sense. Twin beds. These double(?) beds in the middle of the room take up the whole space.
BUT, I like this room a lot, especially compared with the crap the Novos usually do. It's just that it's not as good as what the Lettered Cottage did. Design Bloggers designed a better room than "real" house flippers, I mean designers.
Why did Ree totally shun Lettered Cottage and go with the Novos, because they're more famous? I'd be one bummed little girl.
Here's what Cyclone and I are talking about: http://theletteredcottage.net/a-pioneer-woman-pick-my-presto/
I am also not afiliated with them in anyway, it's just they did such a good job with the floor plan that they ruined the above pics for me.
Three posts in a row FTW... I just wanted to say what IS the Novo's obsession with those Flor tiles? I've never seen them use anything else. Well, maybe in their own homes, but everyone else's homes, it's carpet tile.
@Elisha -- you do realize that the letteredcottage mock-up prominently was actually BASED around Flor tiles, right?
I like this version way better than the Lettered Cottage..and I adore them for the record. Anyone who has a child with a daybed knows they are a nightmare to keep made. Also, I think full size beds are great for kids...good for sleepovers and such. In addition, kids don't need a lot of space in their rooms, as they don't spend as much time in them thanks to the addition of Family Rooms.
I was lucky enough to mingle with the Bob and Cortney Novogratz when there were in Tulsa. They were lovely and personable. Great work!
Have to agree...The Lettered Cottage design was so much more appropriate. This seems out of place.
I clicked over to the PW's website to have a look. There's ONE closet for 2 teenaged girls and no other storage? Where are they supposed to keep their stuff? Don't tell me that it belongs in the family room!
I don't care for this at all, but even if I did, it's totally impractical. Layla's design was very practical and had loads of storage. Even if keeping a daybed made is a pain (and I doubt that... I have a queen sized bed w/ one of the long sides against a wall and it's not hard to make), keeping pillows on those hanging beds is going to be impossible.
SchoolieJoolie...woke up a bit on the snarky side today? My daughter has a West Elm daybed and it is a nightmare. It also requires special bedding, a standard size twin does not go down both short sides. I am sure your bed is a few inches from the wall, daybeds are pushed right up against the wall or bed frame.
Also, my 10 year old daughter has most of her stuff stored downstairs in our home. Older children usually have less bulky things. She crafts and has everything on some shelves.
I agree the Novogratz seem off at times, but I think that is because they try to push things a bit. Sure we have seen hanging beds before, but these are very well executed. I like how the room is not relying on a specific palette.
As for the Lettered Cottage room, there is nothing pushing the envelope. No original ideas (beadboard ceilings, barn doors, and daybeds with drawers under the bed). I really like them, but lets face it, they have the same elements in every design. It is Country Cottage, little room to do anything new. Probably perfect for someone like yourself.
am i the only one that liked the orange carpet?
Actually, no, luckysod. My bed is right up against the wall, just like I said in my comment.
The design looks just like everything else Layla and her husband have done, eh? What the PW's kids ended up with looks just like every other impractical thing the Novogratz machine has churned out with one notable exception - they didn't paint one wall some hard to look at, oversaturated color.
