We love the idea of decorating with books because you're utilizing belongings you already have on hand. For instance, this small stack of hardback books in the bedroom instantly adds extra charm and color to the space.
Instead of using the top of her bedside table (which is prime real estate), Nan puts a floating bookshelf to work. Picking out her most colorful book spines, Nan places them neatly on the wall. The books can be rotated out if you're feeling more monochromatic but we're really liking this colorful display.

Great idea!
I have a similar shelf above my night stand- but the books there aren't for 'decoration.' They're there because I'm reading them at the time...

That bookshelf seems like a good space saving idea until you install it. Problems:
You need to stack the books up by decreasing dimension as you go up, otherwise the stack is a bit unsteady.
Also, the last book in the shelf has to be a hard-cover & one that you rarely ever read since it's going to act as a base to your stack of books.
If you're going to drill holes in the wall to store books, there are more practical options out there.
Why not just use a small bookcase as a nightstand? Or find one with a drawer on top and empty space underneath. I want to be able to reach the books when I'm in bed.
I like it, only I'm afraid to put holes in my plaster walls!
Love that nightstand.
