Q: Unplggd, I need your help! We're parents with a new addition to the family, and our newborn is very sensitive to sounds. If she wakes up, that means we wake up too. We're looking for a humidifier that operates as quiet as possible. Any recommendations?

Editor - It's been awhile since we've looked at the humidifier category, so we were pleased to see the technology has had a notable update: ultrasonic humidifiers are the newest deal for adding moisture back into the air with high-frequency sound waves created with metal diaphragm vibrated at an ultrasonic frequency. The process creates water droplets as fine as any other humidifier, but without any mechanical noise. Most of these humidifiers aren't exactly lookers in the industrial design department, but the Vornado Ultrasonic Humidifier is mostly benign and also offers a LCD setting display, warm or cool mist and can humidify up to coverage up to 1250 sq. ft.

Any humidifier will make little gurgling sounds. That's just how they are. I have an Air-O-Swiss that is pretty silent. If noise is the problem for your infant, get a white noise machine -- it can be a fan, filter, static radio, whatever to cover the other ambient noises. Infants actually like womblike noises. ;0)
