By a certain age, kids long for a secret hideout, a place all their own to play and imagine. If you want to create such a space in your home, there are tons of options - temporary forts made from sheets, teepees, tents, playhouses, clubhouses and treehouses. For the architecturally blessed, there is this.
This modern home features a secret playroom above the bedroom accessible via a climbing wall. The space above is tall enough to sit comfortably and stand carefully. It's probably not the most practical for cleaning purposes but it is pretty nifty. If you're curious about the rest of this home, check out the slideshow on Dwell.

My son (6) was just requesting a secret passage to the attic the other night. Made me remember my dreams of having a secret passageway in my bedroom as a kid. Unfortunately, we have no skills or funds to carry this out so we do what we can with sheets and curtains, :).
awesome! I always wanted my parents to fix up our attic for a secret playroom!
Shouldn't that kid have shoes on!?
Brook, wouldn't shoes make it harder to climb? It's not like he's on some rough natural rockface outdoors somewhere that might have sharp edges.
As for the idea, love it, totally! As for practicality, if a parent needs to go up there and can't handle the climbing wall, you could just use a ladder.
I might put a padded mat or something underneath.
Climbing is MUCH easier without shoes.
It's probably not the most practical for people who can't afford random trips to the ER.
Oh please, didn't you people ever climb fences and trees as a kid? This picture is my 9 year-old dream come true!
What a wonderful idea! While we don't have the luxury of the hideout, I'd love to create a climbing wall like this for my 6 year old. Any tips on how to do this? Where to find the materials, can it be screwed into the studs in the wall, how much weight will it support?
