I was driving down the street the other day and saw the exterior of this home out of the corner of my eye. I literally had to take it into reverse for half a block to do a double take.
The rest of the block was the same period homes one after the other, and they all pretty much blended together. I was in such delight to see how this home has been modernized in such a fun, simple and tactful way. Keep this lime green door in mind when considering making changes to your facade — It goes to show what a creative palette and a fabulous new front and garage door can achieve.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Looks good! Those stair rails are killing me - the cool new doors are begging for a hip modern design.
I would love to see the inside. Knock on the door!
Very cool! And I too would like to see the inside!
Something is off here. All the window trim needs to be dark; the white trim on the blue/gray part of the house is really bad. I would also have done a different garage door and probably painted it to better blend with the brick so it wasn't another 'object' on the facade. I like the green door. Close but no cigar.
Now that, I like.
Maybe it's just the photograph (lighting, etc.) but none of the colors harmonize well with the brick, which they are stuck with unless they paint THAT. I'd have suggested more of a cream white, a warmer gray, and some other color for the door -- if a yellow-green, a warmer one. (I think that color looks terrible with the brick, though -- so maybe I'd go with a bright red-orange or something.)
But if it's the rainy day or other lighting issues, maybe the colors work better in Real Life. The landscaping looks promising, if we could see more of it...
Well, I like it. A lot.
In addition, there is some not too insignificant landscaping going on there. Yes, this is a great home.
This is a happy house! I agree, knock on the door and tell them we want to see the inside!
I like it. It's unusual, but it works.
looks like pieces from three houses were put together to make one. Yuck.
Danistyle, show us your house.
Several good things here, but I have to agree with others who commented that some of these components just don't play nicely together. The left blue and green side with its modest bits of brick is harmonious but doesn't seem to belong to the redone right side. There, the white's too stark, the brick--handsome in itself--stands out as a sore thumb more than an attractive design element. The potential is there, the owners are moving in the right direction, but it doesn't all hang together yet. Perhaps they'll keep going with updating this exterior as a unified whole. Thumbs up on the boulders and plantings.
Love the fact AT is finally posting a 70's split level! I just bought a dated, bland looking split level which I was planning to modernize... I am going to use just about ALL of these ideas but with a different color combo and possibly another stone instead of brick. Nice!
I think it looks really nice and love the green door and huge windows. Only thing that seems off to me is the garage--especially those small roundish windows. Everything is very linear and those seem out of place to me. Also if they's painted it grey to match the rest it would come together more. Would love to see the inside.
Perhaps the reason why the colors combine weirdly is that it's a work in progress and they plan to do more. As I drive to work, I pass two different houses that have been in revision for several years. One was a slow remodel. The other was a deserted foreclosure. Then it was bought and things started to happen. It has been downright inspiring to watch it come back to life - I'm often tempted to knock on the door and tell them so.
Already awesome home with still some potential to make it a home run. I agree that the front needs a little more continuity. Awesome that an HOA doesn't control the allowed colors of a front door.
In defense of DIYers of house exteriors (and interiors) sometimes it takes a little time to get to all the projects! Give the house that didn't even know it was getting a spotlight a little break. Trust me, I have a garage door and 3 sides of window trims, not to mention a whole slew of landscaping, that announces this every day. We have a plan, but need some time!
The front door (and surround), the brickwork, and the landscaping seem to be speaking the same subtle language. Nice work.
The rest is a bit too loud.
Oh dang, I was waiting for the "after"....tbh.
I'd paint that garage door. Same green, same grey or something- the white is off balance.
ps- I'm not sure how I feel about posting without the homeowners' consent. "Hey, Bob, I saw your house on Apartment Therapy... you really should paint that garage door."
Awkward.
Window trim should all be the same.
This would have caught my eye, too. I especially applaud them for dispensing with a lawn. I'd bet big money the house didn't originally have that creative landscaping.
I think it's lovely - but black trim around that front window and rectangle garage windows would push this over the top into 'fantastic' territory
This house proves with little imagination you can take something that is already vintage fab & with minimal cost turn it into the most AMAZING space on the block. Oh & just for the record, I would have knock on the door with hopes of getting a personal guided tour of home from the inside out too.
That garage door is terrible. Should have been a painted wood with Mod looking windows. That just looks like a piece of crap.
why are ppl complaining so much?
sometimes we buy houses that aren't exactly what we covet, but we try to do the best with what we have.
i think this house is a great example of someone trying to do the best they can with what they have while having some fun with it.
this was a random drive by discovery. the homeowner did not say "hey, here is a pic of my final reveal"
who knows, maybe they have some more plans for working on more of it this summer.
any way you look at it, the ppl who are knocking this lovely house need to either post their own artisticly superior creations, or just sit back and commend the homeowners for having some fun with their home :)
I like it - esp the warm blue-grey with the bright green door! I agree that trimming the large picture window in black would relate better to the windows on the right side. I also agree that toning down the white (esp. the garage) might be an improvement. Overall, though, it is a great job distinguishing an otherwise generic house design.
@NISIEPIE , You do understand that the discussions here are basically critiques, don't you? Nothing malicious is meant, we are all just making observations and offering opinions based on the picture we are given. It doesn't matter if the work is "in progress" or done, if it doesn't look right to someone, maybe expressing why would give the owner (or someone else) insights as to why they might want to consider making a change from how it is in the photo.
I think the poster was simply taken by the surprising green door. If you focus on a detail like that, you might miss the success or failure of the whole. But, as I mentioned, maybe the photo doesn't accurately represent the colors either... opinions are based on what we see, which might not be what's real.
is this house in seattle? border between ballard and crown hill??? i SWEAR i used to live a couple of blocks from this place...
