We loved the big prints from yesterday's small spaces with bold wallpapers. Which led us straight to one more little room with over-the-top personality. The "after" shot is above, and a "before" is below the jump:
This is the dining room of Erin Gates from Elements of Style. Before she papered the snug space, it looked like this:
Now, it's a stylish place to entertain a couple of friends or enjoy dinner at home. We love the graphic black and white pattern and its size. Seems these larger repeats work well for small rooms. What do you think? Read more on Erin's experience with going bold in a small space right here.

I love wallpaper! I'm just so afraid of it.
Love the pattern, but for me it´s too much for such a small space..
This is way too small to be a dining room. Imagine 4 people sitting on that chairs!
That room should be some kind of small office or a bedroom for 1 person.
This is so Wonka factory.

Everybody in!
That pattern makes me feel a bit claustraphobic in that space. It's a beautiful pattern but a bit overwhelming.
I'm with Lillian -- like the pattern, too, but too much for me. I think it makes the room feel a little claustrophobic.
I like it because it doesn't need additional anything!
It probably wouldn't feel quite so claustrophobic if the window was lower so you could see the outside from a seated position. Since you obviously can't lower the window, perhaps a tall bistro table and sleek stools (upholstered with a pop of color?) would help.
Oh my. I love bold wallpaper, but I fear if you spent much time in a wallpapered room this tiny you would be driven slowly insane. Better for a room you leave quickly (like a powder room).
the wallpaper makes that SO small & claustrophobic. No thanks...may have worked better as just an accent on the back wall.
Yeah, I love the wallpaper, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't last 5 minutes in a room that tiny =\
THe good thing about it is that the owners love it.
I could not , would not be able to eat in there or even look at it every day.
I would never be able to relax in such a room, dinner in such a setting would probably give me indigestion. sorry!
I think it looks great. I love the chairs with the table, and the wallpaper looks fine, even though I'm generally not a fan of wallpaper.
But, it looks like a "large" person might have a hard time squeezing around the table to get to the chairs at the far side of the table. The space might be too small for the furniture.
The wall paper, though I love the color, is overwhelming for the space. It also isn't enough to detract from the drab floor. The table should be a narrow rectangle, rather than a circle. The people sitting in the chairs in the back would not be able to leave the table unless those sitting in the front also get up and push their chairs in. Function over form.
Love the wallpaper. But I would KEEP GOING! See if the manufacturer makes a fabric in the same print and do drapes floor to ceiling -- this will soften the hard small square-ness of the room . I'd also like to see some pillows and padding to soften the seeting. Perhaps some nice deep built-in seeting (with added storage inside) on the back wall and the left wall would be more comfortable. Cheap to build and could be painted white then add cushions.
I love it all, but I couldn't be in the room more than a few moments. The intensity of the wallpaper would actually make my head ache. It's a bit like an epileptic thing, extreme contrast, close and repetitive. Can admire from afar.
it's too much for me at the moment. it's needs one nice piece of simple artwork on the wall to break up the pattern.
well, i like it a lot. i think bold wallpapers are actually appropriate for spaces like this, and the light fixture looks classy.
my only gripe is the floor which looks so cold. you can buy natural fiber rugs cut to size for not that much money (google 'custom sisal rugs'). i think a wall-to-wall jute or sisal-wool rug in a light color would look awesome here.
Wait, wait, wait! In defense of the dining nook, I think that the picture is part of what is generating some unenthusiastic comments. We can't see what this nook opens into. I imagine that there is a much larger view from the table which very much helps alleviate any claustrophobic feeling. Also, the photo is taken with a flash rather than natural light, which always makes a space feel less comfy.
I do agree with AliceG that some long drapes (solid color) and chair pads would soften the room and make it a bit cozier. I also wonder about raising the lamp some?
Regardless, way to go with a bold and nicely executed space!
They need to take it all the way!!!!
Get upholstered chairs, get a black, red shade or gold shade on that pendent, paint the trim glossy black and the base or curtains.
The light is hung too low, can't put a center piece or candles with it that low.
I think hanging a large ornate mirror on the wall facing would open it up and reflect some light off the window and the light.
White wainscoting would help a lot.
I love the paper -
- but the table and chairs appear so cheap in that space now.
I like LoriSF's ideas, except that I think a chandelier would work better than the drum shade, because it would visually take up less space. I think the chandelier would look great in a very glossy midnight blue or deep navy.
Or even a glossy bright (or mustard) yellow for the chandelier.
I agree with Lori SF. Keep going. I like silver or chrome with black and white rather than gold. I like the idea of a mirror, although I think the back wall needs something; either art or a mirror would do. I think you need to put something on the floor, because it looks like it's from a different room. A rug gives you a great opportunity to add color. I think heather77's idea is great. A rug with accent colors might help you pick out the accent color for the room.
I know there was a vote for white chairs, but you might also experiment with chrome or ghost chairs. Have fun!
Looks a bit tight for the table and chairs and that wallpaper makes me think that the walls are closing in.
Let's face it... this is a small space even if (when!) it was painted bright white. Bravo for going bold.
I don't think the photo is doing it any favors though, in the claustrophobia department. But I bet it's lovely when candle-lit for dinner.
I'm with aliceG-- Love the idea of a coordinating fabric, perhaps doing a Roman shade in the same pattern. Hell, I'd tent the ceiling, too!
I agree with LoriSF about doing a black shade. But not about painting the trim black!
Hi, I like the wallpaper but for me, it is too much of a good thing.
Right now, it seems like everything is competing for attention. The space is tiny. Maybe some white wainscotting and white paint on the lower half of the wall would bring the wallpaper in proportion to the size of the room and make your chairs stand out against the white. Any horizontal line would make the room look larger. I like the idea of a chandelier because I find the drum shade a little large for the size of the room and it blocks the view. A chandelier lets you see through if ever you want to hang art on the walls. A mirror on one of the walls would instantly make the room seem larger and also bounce any lighting you choose.
By the way, I have the same table and black bentwood chairs and I just love the combination. With your colour scheme, it must be so easy to go from casual to chic! You inspire me!
...need.....air...
yucky
What a great wallpaper pick! I like the team you've created, just not sure if they are all complementing each other the best in the space. With that said, my editing advice would be this: Find a taller table top with stools for seating. I think that would help give the room some air, as well as including a sparkly chandelier with a ceiling rim for activity overhead. You've got great picks for a dining room set and those pieces could work really well in other spaces too!
Adding a rug or changing the flooring would definitely help this space come together!
Also mentioned above was painting the trim and I second that. The white gives so much contrast that when I look at the photo, I am immediately drawn to the white trim, other than bringing my focus immediately to the gorgeous wallpaper.
Some interesting art installation and flowers on the table could really add more character as well.
I admire the courage and bold choices you've already implemented and I thank you for sharing this space with me.

Three things I need in this room -
1. Something else on the floor.
2. A great big mirror on the back or right-hand wall to expand the space.
3. Another photo of the space that shows more of the ceiling and is taken when daylight is coming through the window (and reflecting off of the installed mirror).
OTHERWISE - great concept! I love your table, love your wallpaper and love the idea of using huge design on a small wall. And talk about a transformation!! You made great things happen!
I don't agree that 4 people couldn't sit here. I could pull it off. In fact I love that the size of the space invites clandestine conversations. I want to tell someone a secret in this room, or play poker!
