This idea for a fun summer activity hits all the right notes. It is inexpensive, involving a few little trinkets either purchased new or dug out from the bottom of the toy box. It involves a big block of ice on a hot summer day. And it involves smashing stuff with a hammer. What's not to love?
The Weekend Homemaker has found a way to fight off summer boredom and release pent-up energy in one fell swoop. By taking a few waterproof toys and freezing them in a container of water overnight, your kids can chip away at their ultimate goal, which is tantalizingly visible encased in a solid block of ice. Be sure to provide adult supervision, as they will need to be swinging a real hammer to get the job done.
Eye protection is also a must here as well. We think this idea, incorporated into a treasure hunt of some sort, would make for a memorable summer afternoon. Step by step instructions can be found at the Weekend Homemaker.

I'm thinking safety glasses with that.
i've been doing this with my boys for years. they love it.
this seems a little dangerous to me...
Safety glasses is a must. Don't lose your grip kid!
I think more important than safety glasses is finding a hammer without the claws on the back. (Do they make those?) I can't even be trusted with a hammer because those things can be vicious!
A Ball-Peen hammer does not have claws
