A Soothing Space For a Young Family

Professional Project

Project by: Akin Design Studio
Location: Lehi, Utah

Stephanie is one half of an interior design couple that just launched their own business while also looking after their new baby. If that wasn't completely impressive already, take a look at the space they designed for themselves. With a mix of high and low furniture pieces and some well chosen art, they've created a calm and inviting family home.

From the designer: My husband and I are both interior designers based in Utah and designed our own apartment space together. We recently launched our interior design firm called Akin Design Studio and we are now running that while taking care of our new baby girl.

This apartment is located on a hillside with incredible valley views on the outside and soft neutral bones on the inside. We were thrilled at the opportunity to take on the this blank canvas of possibilities upon moving in! The one bedroom/one bath has vaulted ceilings in the main living area, which means lots of blank wall space to address. Our solution to that was very large art! We both have a more contemporary style so when we saw this abstract at Alice Lane Home Collection we knew it was the one for our dining area. Nothing helps your new space feel like it's your home like getting something you love up on your walls! We both feel it's important to make wherever you're living feel like home, even if it is an empty apartment.

By incorporating a mixture of our favorite high & low pieces throughout the space (KIVIK sofa from IKEA, we love the wide arms for extra seating when entertaining), we were able to stay within our budget while making it feel like that is where we've always belonged.

The apartment also features several custom designed pieces including the nightstands, the dining table, and the side table in the living room. We love to incorporate at least one custom piece into each space we design; we think it gives the room that personalized touch for each individual client, in this case, ourselves! We hope you enjoy our space!
