A Space-Themed Nursery for León

My Room

Name: León (11 months)
Location: The Hague, The Netherlands

My husband and I both work in the space technology sector, and wanted our little boy León to have an outer space-themed room that’s whimsical and futuristic (me) while rooted in science (my husband).

I’m generally not very crafty and I really cannot sew (I mean that. No buttons, no hems, nada). So it was probably hormones that motivated the craft projects for the nursery, which mostly happened when I was eight months pregnant.

1. I made a little play rug featuring aliens around a starry bonfire out of three sheets of dark blue fleece, some anti-slip underlay, lots of felt, and an unimaginable amount of stitching.

2. I sewed the two blue pillows with space-y patterns, as well as two other cushion covers so we could rotate between them.

3. I composed and printed the name art on the bookshelf with photos available online. I chose to feature natural icons of our planet – the lion and the Cataratas del Iguazo waterfalls – to highlight how much a part of the outer space environment we are.

4. I devised and got my husband’s help to put up the mural of the solar system. It’s composed of decals from Etsy, a sun cut out of a calendar from the European Space Agency, two rolls of dark blue wallpaper, wallpaper glue, and a lot of panic (why does the glue dry so quickly?).

(I also made a planetary system mobile out of 3D origami paper balls. That was swiftly discarded over safety concerns, when it became clear that the test du jour of dangling paper things consists of reverse engineering and taste testing.)

The art in the room includes:

  • A framed poster of the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission: My husband was part of the project team, and the mission successfully launched shortly after León’s birth.
  • Two framed pictures of zip-lining the asteroid belt and ruling the rock on Titan: We are big fans of the outdoors and of retro travel posters, and these were just too good to pass up.

Source List:

  • Crib: Stokke.com
  • Dresser, baskets, book cases and standing lamp: Ikea
  • Stickers: Cité de l’Espace gift shop
  • Frames: Expo.nl
  • White ceramic box: Zara Home
  • Nursing chair: A random furniture store in Amsterdam. It was originally intended as a reading chair for our study, but was so comfortable that it was co-opted for the nursery instead.
  • Solar system decals: krankykrab at Etsy.com. Except the sun, which was cut out of a calendar from the European Space Agency. The Gaia poster is also from the European Space Agency.
  • Retro space travel posters: Retro Futurism posters
