Family: Amanda, Marcos, Gavin (10), Dylan (8), Emily (4) and Melia (1)
Location: Winter Springs, Florida
My husband Marcos made a back yard splash pad for our four children. It is made out of beautiful (non slippery) Travertine tiles…
We wanted something that looked mature, but very child friendly, and most of all FUN! It is a safer alternative to a pool. It helps our whole family cool off in this hot Florida sun!
My husband, Marcos, is an artist. He does modern art, color on stainless steel paintings/sculptures. He is always building creative things for the kids — having an amazing artist for a Dad has its benefits!
Thanks Amanda, and great work Marcos! When can we visit??

Very beautiful and modern. I love it!
that is awesome.
what would a person expect to spend on a thing like this? i would love for my husband to build one of these guys in our backyard.
Great design and FUN
I want a splash pad in my back yard for my girls! they would love it!
What a fantastic, gorgeous spot. I hope you have room this weekend for visitors!
That's awesome! I live in Winter Springs, too. Too bad we've never met because my girls would love this! :)
Wow. That is amazing looking - gorgeous and tons of fun.
I'm not usually a "safety hound" on here but is this not considered a pool and therefore does not require perimeter fencing? I can't imagine something like this flying under my local zoning code. Too bad because it looks awesome :D
Thanks so much guys! You have me blushing here... :-) The cost was fairly cheap because my husband didn't have to hire anybody to help. So just the cost of materials~cement, tiles, grout,plumbing...etc
Wow! That totally blows the kiddie wading pool I bought my son out of the water. No pun intended. :)
Brilliant Solution to the kiddie pool dilemma!
Amanda - usually the water has to be 18" deep to be considered a 'pool' under the IBC, which is the code used in most jurisdictions in the US. This looks to be less than that, and therefore doesn't require a closed fence. Also, as long as the yard is fenced, and doors have appropriate locks, even a pool would be ok.
I'm really interested that this isn't slick for the kids. I didn't realize travertine had that property. Good to know!
Hello AmandaMomto4: This is absolutely lovely. What a great idea and really thinking outside the box - I never even thought of having a splash pad.
Hello Eskkimmo: Perhaps it is drained when not in use and so doesn't have standing water.
What a clever idea, it's great.
This is amazing!! What lucky kids!
Oh my gosh, I love this--and it looks like the kids do, too!
Wow. I am impressed.
Thanks again everyone! I hope we have inspired you all! :-)
Wow! I'm fascinated. So many questions: Is this linked to your home plumbing and electrical? Does the lower tier drain to empty when not in use? I'm sure it would be pretty involved, but would you consider posting how-to - even just the broad strokes?
I don't know...out travertine tile is pretty slick when wet. I know someone with a splash pad int heir backyard, but its made out of that squishy playground material. Much safer (and doesn't get as hot).
Wow! This is amazing! I want one! Any way there could be a tutorial?
This is amazing!
PLEASE tell me how you did this and post more info..
how'd he get the water to shoot up - is it all by a hose?
does it have standing water when done playing? does it recycle the water for use of what's in there?
is the tile very hard though if they slip - did you ever think about something not tile-y or softer but still non-slip.
where can we see bigger pics too?
It's composed of PVC plumbing, a motor and a filter. This allows us to recycle the water and keep it chlorinated. It is linked to our home electrical. The tiles are not slippery at all! It might look that way, but it's not. Our kids run on it all the time. When not in use for a long period of time like winter we drain it. When in use we recycle the water and keep it filtered and chlorinated. I can ask my husband to design a kit if there is an interest, not only is he an artist but he is a product designer too. Thanks for all the sweet comments and interest! It is a lot of fun!
This is the best thing I have see all week, maybe even all year. I just never would have thought to build a splash pad in the backyard.
A pump makes the water shoot up and we can control how high, med. Or low (the kids tell us) :-)
Great Job Amanda and Marcos. I'm sure your kids love it. Your backyard is beautiful.
That's amazing! My kids love parks that have those, but I couldn't have imagined one in a private back yard. Your husband definitely needs to do a tutorial video or something.
WANT!
Tutorial or kit, please? I've done lots of research on splashpads and most don't hold water, they simply shoot water in air and then drain. The fact that your's a small pool of water is brilliant. Even the adults can lounge in it! And as a San francisco family, I'm in love with your backyard!!!
Is that a treehouse in the background? Is so, may we see it?
Hi, To answer some questions~If you are interested in a splash pad kit/tutorial. Please contact my husband through his website at artbymarcos.com
Yes, We love to use the splash pad as a lounge pool...so nice to lay in it, and the kids have their plastic boats floating there sometimes/make their boats race! Very fun!
Yes! That is a tree house in the back ground and will be featured on here next week, so please stay tuned for that post! Ohdeedoh is awesome for all they do!
Thanks again for all the interest and sweet comments. I was hoping to inspire people! :-)
Best backyard ever!
That is one of the coolest yards I've ever seen.
My toddler (who doesn't like water splashed in her face) could not get enough of the splash pad kids area at our Disney resort while on vacation. I wished we could have one at home... I guess it is possible!
Thats what gave us the idea, We hated the crowds at the public ones and most of them charge a few dollars per person. My husband said why don't I make our own! ;-)
This is great. I prefer this over a pool in the backyard!!
WOW! Just wow! Would love to have this for my kids (and me!)
Holy hell I want one. Your husband should definitely design a kit/tutorial - this is brilliant. I'd pay for it, no question.
This is sublime. Backyard DIY at it's best. More please!
100% awesome! Will definitely look at his web site.
This is so awesome!
Holy cow!! This is gorgeous!! Can't wait to see the tree house ...and with all these great ideas on the outside I sure hope we'll see some great indoor shots - or really anything more from Amanda and Marcos on Ohdeedoh and AT! Kudos on such a sophisticated and fun splash pad for the whole fam!
How fun!!! Who wants to maintain a pool...this is perfect for people with kids and grown-ups who want to cool off quickly! Love it!
Thanks again for all the awesome comments and interest! My husband is working hard on a tutorial/kit. If you have contacted us recently...so sorry if we haven't wrote back. We have received a ton of emails! We will be contacting you eventually. If it's been awhile...Feel free to resend us an email too! Thanks again for all the love! ;-)
I can't wait to see the tutorial/kit. We are moving to Fla. soon and would love to do this in our backyard...better than traditional splash pads due to adults being able to use it as well!! For those of you afraid of traverntine tile slippage, which I understand is not a real problem here...but just in case you are wary, there are solutions to pour on the tile to make it 100% fail safe. I think one is called slipsafe.
Anyway!!! Looking forward to the kit!
What an amazing idea! Lucky kids, lucky mom! Enjoy! Keeping this idea...
Love this idea how do I get kit?
How can I get a kit?
i would love a kit and tutorial!!!!!!! would love to make this!!!!!!!
How do i get info about a kit and tutorial. I went to artbymarcos.com but didn't know where to email on there. I could only find the gallerys emails. Please let me know. I would love to have one for the summer.
Would love to get the plans/kit for this as well... what a creative family!
Would also love the plans and tutorial for this for this summer.
would love to know how he did this. I will do this myself. I need this, I live in Henderson, NV! THE HEAT and I do not want dogs swimming in the pool and the kids don't have to wait on me to get wet. The pool they have to wait till I am ready to get in with them to be a life guard. PLEASE SEND ME the info to 365recreate@gmail.com with subject reading splash pad diy so it doesn't get lost in spam. THanks
