In designing the house, architect Barbara Bestor was inspired by midcentury designs (like those of Paul Rudolph), but didn't want the project be entirely derivative. "We didn't want to regurgitate expected modernist tropes." She also had to work around a lot of restrictions, like a building height limit of only 13 feet.
The end product is a house with a midcentury feel (flat roof, beamed ceilings, walls of windows, transoms galore) but a beachy warmth and casualness. It's the perfect home for the Nicks and their two young children.
In the end, the Nicks family decided to make a permanent move to Carpinteria. The new house is two-thirds the size of their old one in LA, but, Stephanie says, it's brought the family closer together. And having a beach in the backyard doesn't hurt.

Sprout Side Table
I don't think anything qualifies as a "shack" in Carp. It's a very affluent area. Nice community, though.
I'm just going to close my eyes for a minute and imagine I live here.
I love... I love... I love... I love... I love.....love overload! The shiplap, the dark pool, the wood deck, the rug, the blue...
Just to let you know I designed this place years ago, in my dreams.
If this a shack then I live in a hovel, LOL. I like the wood in the interior!
Such a fan of Barbara Bestor's work. This is gorgeous--warm, modern, relaxed.
seriously love that rug.
That shower . . .
If you owned a beach house near Santa Barbara, why on earth wouldn't you live there full time?
I'd take location over size -we are 6 blocks from Lake Michigan -the only affordable lakeside real estate in IL! (That is the biggest lamp I have ever seen!!) Very MCM -I lurve the exterior!! And that bathroom?! Only thing I don't love (but could certainly live with) is the plywood-looking walls -looks like insulation and drywall is missing in some spots.
Oh well, I guess it's fine if you only need somewhere to lay your head.
:O
This is the shack of my dreams.
I ADORE the art work and photos throughout, the rug, the pool, everything!! Perfect example of a clean, MCM motif but with warmth and personality.
I think the missing drywall is what makes this dream home a "shack" LOL. I LOVE IT!
Where can I get the bathroom flagstones????
