Do tree houses for adults exist in the backyards of Brooklyn? They sure do. The NYTimes recently featured Alexandra Meyn's personal retreat from the city in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

With the help of some friends (who can say no to a tree house), Alexandra designed, built, and decorated her tree house using reclaimed materials and a $400 budget. She recently made the 40-square-foot space waterproof and airtight, so she can use it as a painting studio this winter.
