Design*Sponge recently featured this circus themed tree created by the Once Wed team inspired by a wedding of the same theme. An aversion to clowns has us pretty certain we'll never go the the circus route for the holidays, but the gorgeous yellow tree topper is something we could definitely see ourselves recreating this year.
Thanks to the response on Design*Sponge, Once Wed just posted a online tutorial about how to create your own fabric pompom tree topper.

Now that our traditional idea of the tree topper has been flip turned upside down, we are eager to hear what alternatives you've used to top your tree outside of the normal star or angel.

cute idea!
I love this tree-topper! I have always been a fan of doing anything but the traditional tree-topper. This year I did a large snowflake on-top of our Christmas tree, and I love how it turned out.
my mom puts a stuffed flamingo on top of her tree. long story. :)
We use a homemade peace sign (made of aluminum foil and cardboard), but I wish I could find a real iron one.
I made my tree-topper by paper clippping together the square cardboard bases of 2 large bows together.
I got a small dinky tree this year - only abour 4 feet. I tied a floppy red satin ribbon as a topper and it's cute. With the handmade ornaments, and it's very cozy looking without looking cheap
I have used a koala bear for years. One of those that clip on.
