An event with retro style to spare! Holiday party inspiration abounds in a feature all about a soiree pulled together by ad execs Tereasa Surratt and David Hernandez in their West Town home. From a request to the guests to wear a little something from the 50s or 60s to the typical for back then, but kitcshy fun for now food and drink selections, it's got all the makings for a smashing success.
Just a few of the "vintage chic" details that went into this party plan:
• It was a great "excuse" to use the host's collection of vintage tabletop wares, thrifted over the years
• Old school holiday tunes (Sinatra and Elvis) was the music of choice (photo 1)
• Vintage style holiday wrapping paper was used instead of a tablecloth
• Retro treats such as coffee with a mix-in bar and white chocolate fondue were served (photo 2)
• A flashdrive of music from the evening was a gift to the guests (photo 3)

This is my DREAM party!!!
If you click on the link, the party goers look like mannequins. This is a fun night?
And they park a motorcycle in the living room? Please. No more "staged for the camera" fake ideas.
The party scene looks like a shopping window setup - staged, fake, and ad-like.
I don't know about you, but this doesn't look like a fun party to me... And was this a Christmas party when?
I love theme parties! This summer, my husband and I hosted a Vodka-Latke party with a twist: Instead of a flight of vodkas, I served jasmine spritzers.
I looked to Russia's southern border and Chinese-Russian relations for the theme: Sino-Soviet Night.
We invited guests to come in cheongsam or hanfu, or wear a ushanka or kaftan. But we weren't completely authentic -- I served latkes with wasabi and tobikko (Japanese), and other dishes that were only remotely evocative of the theme.
I hate retro stuff, ha ha, but the guy at the turn-tables is hot. I'm definitely more of a fan of something more creative like urbancricket suggested. Something a little more off the beaten track. :) And like the idea of decluttering by giving the funky old mismatched shotglasses as party favors. YES.
In fairness, this ~was~ staged for a magazine photo shoot (Chicago Home and Garden I think). And hosted by Ms. Surratt who is a creative director at an ad agency. That said, I can tell you from personal experience that this is authentic and true to their life (yes, much different than the majority of our lives). They are generous and creative hosts.
I totally have the red rya rug (in the link to more pics)! That party does look awkwardly unfun, like no one's allowed to touch anything. :(
those are some hot korean legs
Who doesn't love a good theme party, especially when you can use things you already own and love. I caught the entire article in print, and they have so many more great ideas and photos from this party. This inspires me to get a head start on my holiday entertaining plans!
Um. Duh. It's a photoshoot for a magazine, so of course it looks like one. :) It's pretty accurate as far as the kind of parties that D&T throw. It's called editorial. Also, the champagne I was drinking the background was very real. Love you guys! -M
I think that party looks so inspiring! Well dressed. Well propped. Well done I say! I mean sure it's a photoshoot and for a magazine but I think it's inspiring and makes me really rethink my next party where I typically throw out a bag of chips and a 6 pack of high life.
Was this a theme party for seven people? I'd call that more of a gathering, but impressed, they must really like those seven people.
when I throw a party, it may be themed and posh with chefs are bar people, but pictures always seem to include innapropriate things in the background....piles of vomitus, innapropriate same gender touching, old women smoking things that are not factory made. This party just seems, well, creepy. Reminds me of the photo shoot in Martha Steward a few issues ago when the totally cute decorating guy threw a housewarming party and they played pinngpong around a vintage murano glass fixture and kept score with pristing tubes of Chanel lipstick. Magazines, take note...real pictures of real people are much more interesting!
I hate theme parties, maybe it's fun to organize one, or maybe it looks good in a magazine, but why do people need a theme to get together have a few drinks and good food with good conversation? No need for embarrassing social games... Argghh.. I especially hate costumes or dress-up parties. It seems so forced and artificial.
you guys are no fun. i like this party! not saying that a bag of chips & 6-pack isn't a fun party, too. there's room for all manner of partying over here in my datebook.
mostly, i want the stereo. i want a big piece of furniture that opens from the top to reveal turntable, etc. somebody should bring those back.
The DJ with the hair is our friend Mike...LOVE IT.
