We called the cast-off trend last year. We saw beds and tables being made out of cast-offs like wood cable spools and wood pallets. We're adding one more cast-off-to-furniture project to our vault.
That's a standing front-facing bookshelf made from two wood pallets above. We found this on the talented Ana White's website made by one of her readers. Unfortunately, there isn't a how-to for this project, but Anna does have a ton of other great uses for wood pallets. You can check some of them out here.

This is way cool! I love the concept of taking something that would probably get chucked, and taking it and making it something completely useful. Besides that it has kind of a nice rustic look to it.
This is another creative idea to go along with the creative ideas you have already posted about using wood pallets for furniture. This has been mentioned before when you publish one of these items, but it seems not to have sunk in. I would not want my kids storing their books on this book shelf. Wood pallets are very often saturated with pesticides and fungicides. These toxic chemicals seep into the air you breathe inside your home. Is that the kind of indoor environment you want to create?. These chemicals cannot simply be cleaned off. No amount of washing or scraping will get them out. Used wood pallets do not belong inside your home. You don’t know where they come from or what is on them.
