Name: Heather Lenkin
Location: Pasadena, California
The idea behind our outside space was to bring a touch of Paris into the courtyard of a California apartment in Pasadena. The apartment is adjacent to the famous intersection of Orange Grove and Pasadena where the Rose Parade begins on January 1st of each year.
Custom stone work, paving, and wrought iron were used to give an ancient feel. Faux finish painting techniques were utilized to enhance the aging effect. The space is used year round and shifts roles between being a cozy reading retreat, lunch time getaway, and enchanting evening party locale.

I wish I lived somewhere with year-round patio weather
Pretty and classic. Looks very "Pasadena" in a nice way.
I live in the area and can appreciate this lovely year-round courtyard. There is actually some good information on the designer's website regarding this design that was not included here!
@Thorndale - because creeping fig is beautiful. And because these people clearly have enough funds to repair any damage that might occur over the long term. Although, I suspect the intention is for the creeping fig to cover the entire wall, coating it in a lush layer of green.
I love Heather Lenkin and Lenkin Design! Thanks for featuring it on Apartment Therapy! Heather and her team are so talented, they have such a special gift.
That courtyard embodies the best of the Pasadena look. The greenery is so lush and the whole effect just oozes calm and sophisticated. That's why I love living here (though my backyard isn't nearly as put together). On a side note, the Rose Bowl Parade starts at the corner of Ellis and Orange Grove. :)
Thanks for all of the nice comments everyone! We hadn't even realized that this was posted until now. We do landscape design and installation all over Los Angeles, but Pasadena remains a favorite. We're glad our space conveyed the feeling of the city that we love so much. Check out more of our homes at www.lenkindesign.com!
