Having had such a great time at the Christie Antique Market a few weeks ago, we're hoping to get to the Aberfoyle Antique Market this weekend. Aberfoyle is an open-air market spread out over 20 acres and runs on Sundays from May through October. This Saturday is the Fall Antique Show Special, when over 150 dealers will be onsite.
The Aberfoyle Antique Market has been running since 1961 and claims to be Canada's oldest antique market. We'd love to know - have you been to the Aberfoyle Antique Market? How does it compare to the Christie Antique Show?
Click here for directions and more information on the Aberfoyle Antique Market. This Saturday the show starts at 7 am and runs until 4 pm. Early admission from 7 am to 8 am costs $10 per person. After 8 am, admission is $5 per person.

Aberfoyle is a great market. It runs from May to October, every Sunday. It's $2 to get in and its pretty big, just roughly a 45 minute drive from Toronto. I go pretty often, usually towards the end of the day hoping to get a deal---which usually works as the vendors don't always want to pack everything up at the end of the day. In comparison to Christie--yes Christie is definitely bigger with more vendors and only held twice per year so the selection is more varied. At Aberfoyle it can sometimes get a little stagnant in terms of the selection, probably because there is only a week between each show. I've picked up lots of things at both markets, especially Aberfoyle. If you live in the Toronto area or you are visiting, Aberfoyle is worth the trip.
Thanks for this article, and EyotJen for your comments too! I MUST convince hubby to go this weekend! :)
I go to Aberfoyle a few times a year. It is great. The prices are definitely much cheaper than what you would find in Toronto, at least a third less than any store on Queen Street. For the cost of gas and $2 admission, it is also just a nice way to spend an afternoon. Before or after shopping you can drive 5 minutes into Guelph for lunch.
Thank you for reminding me about this!
And thank you for sharing Canadian events.
I was just there last Sunday! Bought a ukulele for $20, and am trying to learn it... fingers are a little numb.
The market is great - some of the "shacks" are a little less organised, a little smelly, but you can definitely find treasure. I think EyotJen is right - there's definitely less "new stuff" to see each time, as the vendors are there every week for the summer season. There are a lot of vendors here who really know their stuff, though, and I've had great conversations throughout the market. There's a cafe in the centre of the market with greasy breakfast food, burgers and a few sandwiches - bring your lunch if you're vegan/veggie!
And don't forget that the speed limit is only 50km/h in Aberfoyle! Most people just blast through on the way to Guelph or the 401...
We were just there a couple of weeks ago! Greatest thing about it was that we ran into Tommy Smythe and he was nice enough to take a photo with my daughter. Unfortunately, the market itself was not very interesting, and it was super-small compared to Springfield, Ohio in the summer. I also think that, having been a huge antiquer all across the American Midwest, Canada's antique market (like everything else in Canada, it seems) is extremely limited and WAYYYY overpriced. I have yet to find any antiques in Canada that are really worthwhile compared to the US.
