Using roller window shades is as popular as ever right now because they're relatively inexpensive, practical and can actually look really great. And, If you are looking for a more custom look, they are easily transformed through the addition of a few ribbons…
Tip Junkie came up with a tutorial on a cleverly simple way to embellish roller shades using everday products — ribbon and glue.
Of course, you can choose to do whichever pattern or shape you desire, but playing up the rectangular shape of the shades works well — a mitered square pattern was used in the example. The time and money put into this DIY is so minimal, especially when seeing how good the"after' results are. For less than $40 and just under an hour you can create a unique window covering.

I'm sorry you can add whatever design you want - they're still roller shades and they're awful - ask anyone who has spent 20 minutes trying to get them in the ideal spot but they either won't pull up or they flap all the way up scaring you to death!
I have seen a few examples of roller shades or blinds adorned with ribbon and in some cases, it can elevate the look. However, that is not so in the example picture here (IMHO). The pattern of the ribbon does not go with anything else with the room and all that is does is attract attention to the cheapest item in the room.
Wow, I miss the days when peoples' responses had a positive tenor. If you don't like it, just don't reply.
This is a great idea for *any* kind of window shade, and thank you for sharing! I have seen this on curtains but hadn't thought of using it for other coverings as well. I don't have roller blinds, but I'll keep the personalizing idea in mind in the future.
Thanks for this tip. I have white rollershades and white paint in my bedroom so that everything just looks so bland. What makes it worse is that my landlord doesn't believe in throwing anything out that is still functional so the roller shades are kind of dirty and frayed. I wanted to buy colored ones, but they would cost me over 100 dollars. At least now I can buy the cheap Walmart roller shades and jazz them up for much less.
I actually really like my roller shades (super easy to roll up/down, keep out ALL the light, etc.) but the plain whiteness was getting to me. This seems like a good way to make them less... white. I have also been playing with the idea of swapping out the current white vinyl with fabric... We'll see!
@lydiechan critical dialog has been a vital part of art and design communities forever, and in fact is romantic and supportive of aesthetic development. Enforced positive tenor dumbs everything down and leaves people feeling entitled. Nothing in these criticisms smacks of nastiness or personal attack. The comments are relevant to the post. It can't just be based on what you like. And for the record, I really don't like your comment. It epitomizes the negative tone you are complaining about, and serves to shut a conversation down.
For what it's worth, I think a better example of the applied decoration to roller shades would help. I think the thing that makes the rollers look cheap is that they are mismatched with cheap looking floral flouncy things.
@ slowartist - but there is a big difference between a contructively negative comment (like yours referencing the curtains) and some of the "it looks cheap" comments early in the thread.
I agree, the graphic blue and white seems at odds with the floral print. I think a smaller, more geometric pattern would really be sharp with them.
Actually, this tutorial was NOT made by Tip Junkie it was created by Kathleen from Grosgrain Fabulous. The Roller Shades were part of a multi-step bedroom makeover and the final stage of the room pulls all the colors and patterns together, nicely. I think feedback is important and it doesn't always have to be mindlessly positive. This is a good idea but looks wrong in this room.
Thanks for your sharing!
