Adding a Shot of Color in Unexpected Places

Lately I've been loving the look of vibrant accent color used in unexpected ways. Instead of the traditional accent wall, painting a ceiling, floor, or nook in a vivid hue injects the room with an extra dose of personality and can highlight an architectural detail when used strategically. 1. The saturated orange hue in this book-filled nook from Dwell magazine highlights the architectural detail and brings interest to the surrounding white walls.

2. The turquoise floors in this kitchen from Martha Stewart add serious drama to the space and play off of the green walls and vibrant accessories.

3. The colorful ceiling in this kitchen, photographed by David Christensen, creates the illusion of added height and energizes the white and wood-toned space.
