Kristen always loved the look of a fireplace in a master bedroom, even though she acknowledges that the weather in North Carolina rarely requires one. Eager to spruce up her inner sanctum and to add some visual interest, she picked up a battered mantle at a flea market in Raleigh.
She stripped, sanded, and repainted her flea market find before installing it in her bedroom. The last step was the spark that makes this project jump out- she painted the section of wall inside the mantle with black chalkboard paint. Add one talented artist (her stepdad no less!) and a wonderful illustration of a fire, and Kristen has a truly unique focal point for her bedroom.

Love the chalkboard faux fire! Was thinking about putting a fireplace mantle in my bedroom as well - are there any rules about where to place such things?
I love this! If only I knew someone that could draw that well. Lucky you! Your stepdad did a great job!!
Love that chair, too~
This is hilarious. I would love to have this in my house. Completely unforgettable.
@TahitianPearl, rules? It is fake, you can put it anywhere you want.
So darling, I love it!
I love this, but I have the opposite problem - a fireplace in EVERY single room, and they just take too much space in a 3-bedroom apartment.
Sorry. I hate faux fireplaces even more than I hate color coordinated books. If you want a working fireplace, fine. I don't want anything fake in my home; fake serves no purpose in my world.
You could also just paint up the whole thing, fire, mantle and all and mount it on a wall. Especially if you have a tiny place and especially if you do a more realistic trompe l'oeil version in full colour. You could do the fire part as a separate piece with a "summer" unlit version on one side and the full roaring flames on the other and flip as desired.
For the non-artistic:
Go to your local high school and ask the art teacher if he or she has a student who would be willing to do such a drawing. It's a great thing for a kid to put on a resume/college application, and those little devils work so cheap. :)
You could also buy an overhead projector off ebay. Find a picture of a fireplace, then trace it on the wall.
