Last month Apartment Therapy contributors got to post about our ideal live/work studios, and I put together something eclectic and earthy. When it came to deciding what sort of outdoor dream space I wanted, I had to look no further than a canceled HBO show and a beloved-design era for inspiration.

I loved the show Carnivàle that was on a few years ago, not so much for the subject matter (though I liked that, too) but mostly for the atmosphere! No, I'm not suggesting I'd like to live at a time when the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl were the two most popular topics, but I sure do adore the look of the colors, furniture, clothes and more of this show and time period. I combined furniture from that time (both stylish and a little more down-to-earth) with lots of outdoor white lights and fun, vintage carnival details. A colorful but subdued color palette with pillows and rugs help tie it all together and modernize the look. Here's what I chose:
