During our Escapes month on Ohdeedoh, we are posting great photos and tips for traveling with children from our readers. Please check here for all the details. The first twenty submissions posted will receive the official AT bib. Hope to hear from you soon.
Anna and Lena recently enjoyed their first camping weekend at the MC Ponkapoag Pond site in Canton, Massachusetts. Their mom, Karen, shares her tips with us on how to make the great outdoors a great trip.
The location where the photo was taken:
This picture was taken as we were about to head home from an overnight bike/camping trip (we did it!)
Home is Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and the camping destination was the AMC Ponkapoag Pond site in Canton, Mass. (about 12.5 miles from home).
Your favorite baby or child-friendly activity there:
Many child-friendly activities--great swimming spot for toddlers (with lifeguard), boats available for rental (with life jackets in all sizes), and activities at the lodge for nighttime or rainy days. Plus miles of hiking (which our girls were not ready for--maybe next year!).
Your best tip or words of wisdom for traveling with kids:
We traveled light and could have used more snacks, but we weren't far from "civilization" so it was possible to bike out for more supplies.
Your favorite way to make it feel like home:
Kids were so worn out by the end of the day, that they were asking to fall asleep in the tent. We used the old duvet covers from their old cribs as "sleeping sacks" and a familiar source of comfort. It was also a novelty to pull out the fleece, feet pajamas with polar bears and icicles on them, even though it was summer. I was really hesitant about this trip before we went (especially the biking part), but it really was a perfect weekend. We had to adjust our plans just a tiny bit for the weather, but in the end, it made it a better trip.
