Name: Jonah (5) and Simon (2)
Location: Ephesus, Turkey
Favorite Family-Friendly Place To See or Thing To Do Here: Ephesus was an ancient Greek city, and later a major Roman city, on the western side of Turkey. It is filled to the brim with astounding ruins - and not ones behind glass. You can run down the streets, visit the Library of Celsus and public baths, sit in the largest Theatre of ancient times, and explore long-ago lived in family homes. All this and The Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), too!
It blew the minds of my sons, who were 4 and 18 months at the time - they really got that this was a place where people used to live. And, their ability to run around without being trampled by hordes of tourists made life far easier as their parent!
Turkey in general was history plus leisure, wrapped in a bow of excellent (and kid-friendly) food, amazing hospitality, and a distinct lack of touristy feel. It was unlike any other places I have visited, in that you never really felt like you were on a tourist path. Even in a place like Ephesus.
In addition to Ephesus, I would highly recommend Olympos for families. Beautiful beaches, more ruins, and the mythical Chimaera all make for an amazing time.
Best Tip for Traveling with Kids: Slow down. Where pre-kid you'd go from place to place, with children it is great to stay at least a few days in one spot. Pick a good base with lots of activities nearby. If someone needs a nap or no one feels like leaving the pool one afternoon, you don't feel like you are missing out.
Favorite Way to Make it Feel Like Home: Well, if you wanted to be at home, you wouldn't be traveling, right? But, of course there are those little things that make everyone feel happier. I like having a family-friendly base, which means a hotel or B&B or house swap where we don't have to worry about imposing or just being ourselves.
An Item you MUST Take With You While Traveling: Lots of sunscreen, hats, water bottles, a few small toys, and some Magic Treehouse books. And a camera!
