I’ve got hot new pictures from a project I finished last winter and I’d like to rerun them here as a complete "tour" because the photos are so much better. Also, this is what happens when someone says to me, “OK, kid, go nuts,” and lobs me the keys.
The main room is a simple grey, and received an industrial-looking colorwashing of sorts in the same color family. The glazes were applied with an assortment of sponges, ratty brushes and putty knives.
The kitchen received a faux malachite treatment, see last winter’s post. Brian Gilmartin painted a bathroom in the style of a Renaissance woodcut; and the bedroom was wallpapered. But the one area left to reveal here is the striped hallway.
Every hand-painted stripe I’ve done is unique—different scale, different repeat, different colorway. In this instance we chose a tobacco palette of warm greys to compliment the dining area and main room &c. I continued the repeat across the ceiling and down the other wall, an idea I got from an op-art hallway in some 60s coffeetable book somewhere .
That’s designer Juan Carretero, center stage. He was in charge of the fab décor, for which my painting was just a simple backdrop.

Sprout Side Table
The living/dining room and bedroom are phenomenal...
...but the kitchen is the weak spot for me: Love the cabinets, hate the Faux-Malachite.
BTW - The leather belt-strap chairs and the sofa on the right w/ the squircle arms are great!
Any idea who makes them?
In a word - AWESOMENESS.
I'm swooning over the living room - the windows, the color palette, the concrete-look walls...sigh.
That living room except for the skin on the floor is stunning, love the walls and the entire look.
But, the headless table dog creeps me out.
But this is a beautiful apartment. I agree with bepsf on the kitchen I like the cabinets and the color but not a fan of the walls.
This isn't even my style but I love it. It's so nicely put together and I love everything about it...though I am not a big fan of the table lamp in the living room.
Something about these very masculine spaces gets me all hot and bothered. I just love it! My hope is one day I can have a library with the dark colors and hard accents. *Swoon*
Thanks, Hunted - Those chairs are a good price too!
Now the sofa - Anyone?
Sorry to go off topic, but how do you pull down roller shades so high up in the living room?
I want to compliment you on your complementary color striping.
I never thought of referring to tobacco as shades of grey!? Novel.
It is an elegant and masculine place tho'.
and to think i thought those animal hide rugs were only used for staging every Corcoran apartment on the market! ;-)
i love all the grays, though.
love the living room without the square leather ottomon & the headless dog, just the bar stools as in photo 3. the ottomon & dog are somewhat redundant in this room. love the rest of it--as everyone else says, its very elegant & masculine.
I'm usually not a fan of the faux-malachite, but in this case I like it! It looks beautifully executed and provides a perfect contrast to the living room it opens onto. Beautiful work!
i love that green headboard
'Painting was a simple backdrop ?' The paint work is a jewel, the landlords must have felt so happy when they saw their new grey living room
I love those windows. Had them in various NYC dwelling places years ago--they seem to be a NY thing. Pre-war apt buildings.
Beautiful paintwork!
"how do you pull down roller shades so high up in the living room?"
These aren't your grandmother's roller shades - the kind you pulled down and hoped didn't flip back up...
These use a continuous chain/pulley system which is off to the side of the window which you can't see here...
...but you can see here:

Any help re the source of the gray sofa?
THIS IS BEYOND AWESOME. Beautifully classy - yet witty. A strong point of view. Very New York. Everything in this apartment seems special, carefully edited and soulful. Congrats to Mark on this masterclass. Juan's website has some beautiful things.
Along with some of the others, I don't care for hide rugs - and that poor headless grayhound makes me sad! But every other aspect of that living room has me swooning. I don't really know what "colorwashing" is, but those walls are fabulous.
BTW, those belt buckle chairs are on sale at RH. At $715, they're still not exactly "affordable" - but so gorgeous!
i am loving the bookcase with its leather (?) pulls, the combination between paint and wood works.
the skylight photo above the church pew in the dining room is spectacular as is the kelly green headboard in the bedroom - custom i am guessing.
this apartment should have been in the big book of small cool spaces!
This apartment should be in a magazine. Love the masquline decor! Great city Diggs. My favorite is the dining area. Great use of space.
Absolutely smoky, sexy, aged, masculine, edgy, refreshing and sharp. It gets to feel like a cozy hunting lodge den. Good for the people that live here!
I am in awe of the play between different colors and textures in this apartment; it seems so effortless yet incredily elegant at the same time!
what a gorgeous space you've created! it's elegant, yet cozy and inviting...with such wondeful pieces. I just checked out Juan's site for more of his work...his projects are pretty impressive.
Great collaboration, you guys. Kudos to the painter and designer - the end result looks absolutely gorgeous. I hope as many people as possible see this and realize there are alternatives to off-white egg shell and safe blandness! Going nuts doesn't mean going off the deep end if you are in good hands as the owners of this apartment clearly were.
This apartment masculine, eclectic and calming. I love the cow skin rug and the reusing of the church pew in an urban environment. The chandelier is utterly fantastic! Great Job
congratulations to a fantastic designer...great collaboration! I love the layering of textures, styles, and colors. It takes a very developed ability to marry a feast of visual stimulation and zen ambience. nice balance of daily living and formality. I love entering each room through the spark of malachite green.
What i like most is how a small space has been made into such distinct areas making what looks like a 1-bed apartment seem like a whole townhouse - an incredible design (and the guy in the pic is cute too, does he come with the house?)
I love all of it.
Congratulations to an absolutely awesome designer, this is only one of his many wonderful achievements. I´m in love with the way you make every room a different experience. Love IT.
love love love the trees in the bathroom
I do believe you had a great opportunity to paint this great apt, full of well designed spaces.
Your creativity does complement the furniture and interior design in magnificent ways.
I wish the guy in the pic came with the house too.
I have such a thing for casement windows. (Although I've always wondered -- how do you clean them on the outside?) And here you have huge, double exposure ones, including one facing trees. One can only dream. I'm guessing this apartment is in Gramercy, around 21st or 22nd street.
Love, love, love, the natural palate, the textures, the animal prints, the public space perfect for socializing...
A perfect redesign of a NYC apartment; contemporary, smart, organized and an calm oasis from the bedlam of the city.
This is a unique space, where a magnificent sense of space and light has turned into a cozy and stylish home. A place were you can picture yourself living at as well as delighting the senses looking at it from the pages of a Decor Magazine. It is a true inspiration, Love It!!! Congratulations J
Brilliant!
