Q: My new ground-level apartment in Cologne, Germany used to be a laundry and has very high ceilings (13 ft/ 4m). We built our kitchen into a walk-through room without a window and although I think it has turned out quite cozy I just don't know what to do with the huge white wall behind our dining table...

I wouldn't want anything too dark, as there is little natural light already, but am open to all ideas. I have thought of painting it a bright color (but which?) or hanging some large-sized art (but what?). Thank you for any suggestions! Thank you and greetings from Germany! Christiane

i think a beautiful art quilt would look wonderful hung on that wall. Something modern and colorful.
we have vaulted ceilings and had a large empty wall behind our dining table in our living/dining room so we decided to hang a large piece of marimekko fabric.
i liked the tuuli print the most and actually found that a fabric shower curtain was cheaper than yardage of the fabric...
we just built a frame, and stretched and stapled the fabric on for $50. and it's BIG! just an idea...

oh, since we didnt use the full length of the curtain we have a strip of fabric left and its enough to make 4 12" wallhangings for another room.
I have 4 rooms with large expanses of white walls. I've filled two with art and the other two are now built-in floor to ceiling bookshelves painted white. I love the look.
the space looks kind of cramped - have you thought about getting rid if the table and building a breakfast bar along your big white wall - this might give you a bit more room and break up it's big whiteness at the same time. You could introduce colour in the bench top and/or by spray painting some accompanying bar stools.
The shape and colors of this kitchen make it feel kind of boat-like to me. For that reason, it may be kitschy or may be kind of cool to bring in an old sail from a sailboat to hang up on your tall white wall. I'm thinking something graphic and textural without a lot of color just because everything else seems so busy, and my eye would be looking for someplace to rest.
lime!
You could paint stripes on this wall, or chalkboard paint for menu or messages. And I know that it can look like your grandmother designed you apartment, but I really like colorful plates like those:

Yes, what's goin' on??? As visualingual points out, this was posted further up by Janet Laban (though supposedly at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 28, which makes no sense at all, since this one is marked 6:15 p.m. and comes later in the queu).
A big mirror would open the space up visually, or maybe as other have suggested a canvas stretched with a fun print fabric.
