Now that temperatures in my corner of the globe are no longer hitting the triple digits, my husband and I are looking forward to spending more time outside at our home. Unfortunately, our outdoor space, though large, isn't feeling particularly inviting. I want to get things into tip-top shape for holiday entertaining, and would appreciate ideas to help jumpstart my creativity.
These pictures were taken this summer so please excuse the harsh light. I can't change the color of the fence (unfortunately) or make any structural changes of any kind.
Pros:
- Size- we have plenty of space here to enjoy
- Shade- we are lucky to have both trees and a pergola to help soften the sun
- Bougainvillea- that bush blooms pink and white pretty much all year long
Cons:
- Size- the space is so large, I am uncertain how to utilize it all and make it cozy
- Mother Nature- between the constant sun and the approaching season of sandstorms, this space takes a lot of punishment
- Endless Sea of Concrete- ok that might be an exaggeration, but all that concrete (some of it in terrible condition) can feel overwhelming
The wicker furniture was just handed down from another family before they moved; those cushions have since been discarded. As you can see, we have a plethora of tables and chairs (both glass and plastic), a great grill for BBQs, and even a hammock for quiet afternoon reads. I think we have some good bones, but I need help rearranging everything to create functional and cozy spaces. Any advice welcome!

White Enamel Flatwa...
I would DIY a long wood table (Look up Ana White's plans) for underneath the patio. Decorate the table as you wish, candles in mason jars or vases? Then throw some chairs on that baby and invest in some potted plants to put on the ledge, on the floor, everywhere around that general area to pretty it up.
Then for that large concrete slab. DIY a long bench with upholstered seating to put right against that ledge. In front of that bench, a fire pit. Then 3-4 comfy chairs to continue to wrap around the fire pit.
That's all the ideas I have! :)
Wow, that is a lot of concrete. In the long run I'd think tearing some of that out and allowing for some green space would help. That area has great potential. What strikes me is how hard and uncomfortable it looks. So short term: get something, anything, to soften the space; cushioned chairs, a rug, beach blankets, more pillows on a couch, some plants to make it cozy.
Agreed. Bring the indoors outside with rugs, lamps, pillows, soft seating, etc. I also suggest LOTS of plants to bring color and softness. They can also be used to anchor different areas of interest and add privacy. Also, use white sheets or curtains around the patio to create more drama and privacy. Multiple light sources is a must!
HERE is a great before and after if you decide to do something with the concrete itself. I think multiple rugs would do the trick
For a quick revamp for holiday I would hang some sheer fabric in the pergola ..(white, orange or tourquese are my favorites) It would add colour and a make the space more inviting .. Fabric hammocks or outdoor umbrela
are also great.. It would make the outdoor look like a relaxing zone.. =)
Frankly, really would like to see the inside of this house. Looks interesting.
I would start with a coat of paint here and there. Not on the walls, but the wood could use some white, that makes the overall atmosphere a bit lighter. An irregular set of thrift store chairs in vibrant colours and a big wooden table. A comfortable outdoor sofa with colourful pillows, and indeed, more green!!! If you feel reluctant to remove the concrete (which I would most definitely do, grass is so much more enjoyable) start with lots of potted plants. Oooh, maybe hang some from the planks above, or even better, climbing plants! (Don't know the English word).
And hey, send some pictures when it's finished!
I'd get a deciduous vine growing over that pergola, give you nice cool inviting shade during the hot summer, and allow the light to flow into those windows during the winter.
