Q: A question for the green-thumbed among you, from a completely clueless urbanite! From my top floor flat, I can see part of the roof of the flat below. At the moment, it's being used as a platform for satellite dishes. I can't transform it into an official balcony - that would involve council planning permission, and buying the freehold to this already-rickety looking flat roof. I would then be solely responsible for its upkeep — you can see from the pictures that it's not in great shape. Plus the only way to access it is through the kitchen window, which is currently positioned over the sink!
In the meantime, though, I've been recommended prettifying it with some potted plants, or at least making it *look* like a balcony. What should I do? Lay some artificial grass? Or maybe some wooden decking (like IKEA Platta)? And what kind of outdoor potted plants will need minimal care, and will not blow over at the first puff of wind?
