Q: I just moved into a recently-renovated condo with an open concept. I pretty much have a blank slate to work with (as far as furniture goes). I have an idea of the look I'm going for, but I am really struggling with finding bar stools.

The kitchen island is very tall (46") and all the bar stools I can find in the appropriate height (~34") are way too ornate for my taste or extremely expensive. Does anyone have a good source for some minimal, afforable extra tall bar stools?

What's your definition of "affordable"?
Best bet is to start browsing through these:

Have you checked overstock? They have a huge selection, and are pretty affordable.

If you are open to 2nd hand, craigs list is a good source. I purchased 4 barstools and 2 of them are too high so if you are in the San Francisco bay area; East Bay-you are welcome to come and see them.

If not, good luck with your search.
Maybe what you are looking for are counter stools, not barstools. They are different heights.
We have a similarly tall and skinny ledge around our kitchen, and opted to put a console table against it and use normal height barstools with that.
fakegreendress: what a GOOD idea!
Something like these?

Industry West has some cool ones.
We had the same problem with an extra tall bar top. The only affordable option were old, basic metal school style ones. Here is a link to some: https://www.schooloutfitters.com/catalog/product_family_info/cPath/CAT530_CAT534/pfam_id/PFAM1210
We bought the adjustable height ones and love them. I may paint them or decoupage the seat in the future but for now they are simple and lovely. Most importantly, they fit my budget!
You might want to try Amisco, a Candian company sold in a lot of stores in the US. I sold them for years and they had 34" bar stool. Very affordable and stylish. http://www.amisco.com/where_to_buy.aspx
Forgo barstools and just put your dining set in the area - with both barstools and a dining suite the space will be a little crowded.
Just because you have a breakfast bar doesn't mean you're legally required to put barstools in front of it.
Is 29" high enough? I'm partial to the saddle seat bar stool because it's such a simple design and looks a bit Japanese. Most of the time you see these in a counter-height (24" high). I got mine at Linens and Things when it still existed . But you can find ones suitable for a bar rather than a counter. They also have the virtues of being inexpensive and sturdy.
Here's one with a walnut finish. I've also seen them in light oak, cherry, and black.

I realize everyone else has been trying to help - but I just want to compliment you on the great bones of your space - I hope you are happy for many years there.

Hi Kathleen,
I am having the exact same problem, our bar is the same height as yours. Which stools did you end up choosing? I am curious to know, as our kitchen is similar in style and colors to yours. Thanks!
I found these chairs with adjustable seat from 33-41" ($118 set of two)
