Q: I am just dying to find a media console that doesn't look like your average media cart. I'm searching for more of a buffet or cabinet that can be an attractive piece of furniture as much as it is a media storage unit. The catch is that I don't want to spend more than approximately $500. I've been scouring CL for months and I've been looking through vintage shops. I'm not a huge mid-century modern person, so I find my options limited. Any advice?

World Market has some nice pieces that aren't MCM.

What search terms are you using on Craigslist? It sounds like you want a sideboard or credenza that can be adapted to make a media console. I would use those terms and keep searching CL; suitable pieces should come up quite often.
why can't we comment of that last "balls-to-the-wall" lantern cluster thing post?
I would also suggest you check out your local Salvation Army or other charity Thrift store. Mid Century buffets and long bedroom dressers can be found there quite often. Think out side the box if the finish is not right paint can transform anything into the perfect piece.
Hit the antique stores. I was antiquing (in North Louisiana) this weekend and saw a ton of things to fit your bill. I'd try smaller towns for better prices.
I had been looking for something similar and found the Aiden coffee table from World Market to work very well!

The quality is great, and the depth is perfect for use as a media cart.
For an inexpensive sideboard/media cabinet, try the Isala sideboard from Ikea. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30204171/
It's only $199 and if you don't like the color, you can just paint it.
Or look on Craigslist. Some two piece hutches look good if you just use the bottom piece. Also search on sideboard and buffet.
on sale 695.00 salvaged wood has a similar rustic aesthetic-

Can I just say what a surprisingly pleasant surprise it is to see "That Isn't MCM" in the title of an Apartment Therapy post!
I just bought the large version of the IKEA Stornas buffet and I use it as a media console- to open shelves in the front are perfect for cable box/dvd etc. but it doesn't look like a media cabinet, which I love.

I use my grandfather's Navy foot locker has my media console. I didn't want to mess with it, but it needed to be taller so I bought a piece of plywood, had it trimmed to slightly smaller than the trunk and attached feet to that. I were to do it again, I would put wheels on it instead
If you're into unique rustic imported wood furniture I'd recommend Nadeau in West Hollywood. I just purchased a 3 cabinet/drawer version of this piece:

for $450.00 (which we're using as a media console). The have a web gallery online and get new shipments every two weeks. They also carry a limited number of rustic-industrial pieces. Most items are under $600.
Oops, sorry. Here's the direct link to the piece I referenced above.
