Q: We are in the process of designing our kitchen. A major stumbling block has been the refrigerator. I would prefer a compact due to space constraints. My husband doesn't want a small refrigerator because of the obvious. I am desperately trying to find a narrow one that will give us about 18 cubic feet and won't cost a lot. We are doing this renovation ourselves and the budget doesn't allow for anything too pricey (used and damaged items are welcome). Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. Your site has helped me out quite a bit in the past and i hope you can come through for me again.

I can live with a compact fridge and actually prefer them.
A fridge for beer and soda pop / bags of ice in the garage or pantry works for a lot of families, and I'd go that way
the party fridge needn't be expensive or clever looking since it's kept out of sight.
We have an LG compact bottom freezer that is 10 cu. ft. with nice interior space. It takes up about 4 sq feet of floor space and is 68 inches high. It fits into the space that originally held an old-fashioned icebox in our house--a small alcove off the kitchen. It works really really well--it has the most balanced cooling I have ever had in frig--no colder or warmer areas. And I love the bottom freezer--it has drawers so is very easy to get in and out of.
Oh, and it was very reasonably priced. Ours is white and cost just over $650 delivered (we ordered it on-line and got a better price ). The titanium (I assume that is their version of stainless) is a bit more, but appears to be under $800.
I'm not sure if it's still available but LG had a counter-depth narrow fridge that was between 600 to 800 bucks depending on materials.
Lowes has some good compact models that aren't very expensive. Ikea has an 18 cu model thats reasonable too. And craigslist, alwasy craigslist!
I remember from a Consumer Reports article on refrigerators that interior space is tricky. If you are focusing on 18 cubic feet, two different manufacturers will have different interpretations on interior cubic space. CR could not figure out how any of the companies measured the space, because they were always off. It would pay off to measure the interior yourself.
I've got the LG too and it's great. It makes such a difference when the refrigerator isn't looming over the entire kitchen (counter depth is awesome) and it's so convenient having the fridge portion on top. It's more than enough room for me but if you like to go on big grocery trips or like to store a lot of soda or beer, it might be too small.
I have the same LG and it's great! We did our kitchen remodel ourselves too (we are still in the middle of it) and after lots of research we decided to make a investment on new appliances. We got our at Best Buy, better price and financing.
I bought a narrow, counter-depth Summit for around $600 delivered. It's been great!
Fisher & Paykel. I found it the roomiest interior for the small space I had.
I just purchased my LG 30" wide french door bottom freezer from a warehouse place that does the scratch and dent products. It cost around 700, and make sure it does not matter to you that there are dents on the side (mine are not visible installed).
i also have the counter-depth 10 cubic foot LG fridge. it's fantastic for a small space (and 2 people), but nowhere near the 18 cubic foot size that Bethany is looking for. i would recommend searching aj madison - it's really easy to sort by your criteria (cubic feet, width, depth, etc). i think lg and fisher and paykel make some fridges like the ones you're looking for (but not cheap).
I was hemming and hawing on the same issue - wanting a compact fridge but after seeing the prices on the Fisher & Paykel's (about $1800), I finally wound up going with this slightly larger Samsung for just $999 (decided to forgo stainless steel as well due to budgets) http://www.lowes.com/pd_52809-149-RB195ACWP_0__?productId=3446236
There are 3 24" wide x counter depth models I like: Summit #FFBF245, which a contractor friend has and loves (awesomely energy efficient too) and is about $1000; the same LG models that others have mentioned, and the swank german Liebherr. There's also a website: compactappliances.com that's a pretty good resource.
We also have the LG model. It's actually the second one I've bought. I had it in one place that I sold, and I missed it so much I insisted that we buy the same model when we redid our new kitchen!
We have the LG fridge that is slightly larger. Ours is 24 inches wide and 72 inches tall. It is counter depth and "titanium" in colour and absolutely fabulous. I believe the cubic feet was just under 12. I looked at the Fisher and Paykel online and at the AJ Madison stuff - all looked good but wouldn't ship to Canada. The other option was a Liebher fridge for $4000 at 50% off (not an option). I think that if you want a 24 inch wide fridge, you're going to have to give up some cubic feet. We haven't missed the cubic feet at all, but do keep a chest freezer in the basement to supplement.
I paid $2600 for the 24 inch Liebherr (no ice maker). It is fine for 2 people but wouldn't mind having a little more freezer space.
I recommend Sears. We ended up buying a slightly larger fridge for our kitchen reno, but went to Sears in the first place looking for the 18 cu ft size. They had at least three options, all under or around $700
Great information! I need a new fridge, and I want one that's counter depth (I have a small kitchen). Thanks, everyone.
It's been mentioned a number of times, but I also have the LG fridge and have been really happy with it (almost 4 years now and going strong). I think it probably is too small for your needs, but for anyone else who needs a fridge for a compact kitchen (with 1 or 2 people in the home), definitely consider the LG counter depth!
check out www.compactappliances.com - they may have what you are looking for. good luck!
I ran into these narrow fridges randomly at two different asian markets. In the Chicago area I know I have seen them at the Korean market Joong Boo and the Japanese market Mitsuwa (Skokie?), which leads me to believe it's a thing at asian markets. I think the ones I saw were LG, but I wasn't really paying too much attention to the brand or price.
We also got a counter-depth Fisher & Paykel. Love it. It was a reasonable price - not super cheap, but nowhere near the price of some high-end appliances.
I'm blushing to admit this, but we splurged on the counter-depth, 24" wide x 80" tall Liebherr w/bottom freezer. The icemaker clinched it... and accounts for a grand of the total price. But the extra counter/cabinet space I won in our galley kitchen is worth every penny!
I purchased this the last month and it was delivered today. I luve the size. I have a small living room/kitchen space and did not want a huge fridge. The size is perfect and so the temperature in the fridge and freezer are perfect. Glad I came on this site and saw the your post and others about it.
