Q: I have a question that I'm hoping your dedicated readers might be able to help with! I'm putting together my first place and feel like I hit roadblock after roadblock in trying to identify the perfect pieces - especially since I'm on a budget! I need a light and airy bookcase, that has a bit of glitz, and I love this one from Room & Board - it's just way out of my price range.
Can your readers help identify a similar-looking bookcase, that's cheaper? The other caveat is that I live in Toronto, so I would need a retailer that is in Canada.
Thanks in advance!!

You have the Hyllis from Ikea.

Also in the bedroom of this House tour (read the text wher he explained how he did it).

I was also going to suggest the Hyllis from Ikea - it's only $14.99! If she puts two together I think she can achieve the look in the picture for only $30.
If this shelving unit isn't shiny enough, Krylon has a spray paint called "Looking Glass Mirror-Like Paint" which you can order from Amazon.com for around $10 a can. I haven't used the paint personally but have heard that it works very well!
This is my favorite. I took some time to find it.

You should check out CB2. There are a couple of options you might like!

Hahah I also immediately thought about the Hyllis at Ikea... we have three of them in my sons room and they're great... :)
What your looking for is commonly called an etagere. Their were quite a lot made in the 60-70's and commonly show up on craigslist or ebay. Many stores from thrift to home ware stores use them for their displays -- maybe you could strike a deal? The Hyllis from Ikea is far from what your looking for in terms of glitz, I wouldn't even bother.
I have the IKEA Hyllis, too. Definitely NOT nearly as sophisticated as what you're looking for. They're cheap and they're sturdy and they're silver colored. But they are not a substitute for what you pictured. CB2 used to carry a shelf called 'trig' that you might be able to find on ebay.
How about the CB2 Tesso?

Check out http://homedecorators.com and search for bookcases. They have a ton of open shelving at good prices... affordable enough to cover with metallic or mirror paint if the finish isn't right.
there are no CB2s or home decorators in canada.
as such, you're probably either stuck with a vintage piece, the hyllis, or something a little bit more pricey.
structube has one that's decently priced:

there are a couple of structubes in the city.
Find a cheap secondhand bookcase and use chrome spray paint ($3 at Home Depot, but Lowe's has it also... and I don't know what you have in Canada, but I'm sure there is something comparable) to coat it. You will need to sand and possibly prime it first (also $3 for spray paint primer). Hope you find something you love!
This isn't really the classy look you're going for, but I love love love NSF steel wire shelving. It's so versatile, I have it in every room in my apartment. The cheapest place to get it is usually at Costco, but it also turns up at Home Depot and Lowes.
Ikea's Detolf is 16x14x64 @ $59; it is available online and two or three of them might give you a nice look. You could try it without the front glass/door.

I usually always have good luck on craigslist, so I did a quick search in Toronto and found a lovely silver etagere with frosted glass shelves for $100.
