After a weekend stop at our favorite New York cupcake spot, Sugar Sweet Sunshine, we strolled around the Lower East Side and were literally stopped in our tracks by the window display at the boutique Johnson...
This castle filled the entire window. It was made by Ann Wood, a Brooklyn artist.
We're a sucker for little fantasy buildings like this. Sometimes we feel like we could use a little magic in our lives. The back of the castle has little holes that you can peak through to see ghosts at a ball, an enchanted horse in a tower, and Miss Haversham held prisoner in a tower. The paper mache mushrooms surrounding the castle are based on the spore project design by Doug Rhodehamel. If you're crafty, there's a how-to on his site, and you can try your hand at making your own mushrooms.
In addition to the castles, Ann makes paper mache ships, and little stuffed birds in her workspace below. If you're not sold on the ships, check out the shadow they cast. She sells her work on site and while you're waiting for her to add inventory, check out her blog.
