Name: Ailin Doman
Location: TriBeCa — Manhattan, New York
Size: 600 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5 years — rent
Above a bustling downtown Manhattan intersection busy with gawking tourists and locals going about their daily routine, you might not notice a small fire escape perfectly situated for an optimal view of the chaos below. Stepping into the home it belongs to, you quickly forget the lively street below. The space is at once serene and yet full of life. This well curated, thoughtfully laid out apartment makes up for any lack of square footage with artful arrangement and comfortable charm.
The first thing you notice when you walk into the apartment is how spacious it feels. Technically a studio apartment, in New York it would not be unusual for an apartment of this size to be turned into a one bedroom with the addition of a random wall. Luckily, that did not happen in this case and as a result, the open space feels roomy and comfortable. In the wrong hands though, this one room apartment with angular walls could feel crowded. It takes a creative person, and one who is not afraid to edit their belongings to make the space feel open and welcoming. After a trying out a series of different arrangements, Ailin finally settled on having the living room adjacent to the kitchen and a bedroom next to the window and aforementioned fire escape.
To create a division of space, she added curtains that usually remain open but that can be shut to give the room some division when necessary. The choice of the soft lilac color of the curtains that draw the eye toward the high ceiling and then back down to the hardwood floors echoes the subtle color scheme in the home. The gray sofa is offset by the warm taupe textured carpet and a hammered metal coffee table that doubles as storage. When space is at a premium, having furniture that does double duty is a necessity.
When she needed extra storage space for books and well-loved pieces of artwork and family photos, Ailin, with the help of her father, decided to build a shelving unit into the corner of the living room to utilize a previously awkward area where the walls come together at a bit of an angle near the entrance to the bathroom. Leaving the wood natural anchors the look of the corner and blends well with adjacent furniture pieces such as the wooden bench that is used to hold books and decor, but that can easily be pulled out when extra seating is needed. Balancing out the natural wood feel of these pieces are clear acrylic nesting tables that hide in plain sight, not taking any visual space, but are available when needed.
Ailin says:
Living in NYC does have its challenges. But, if you surrender to the four walls you have, it's amazing what you can create AND it's an interesting way to learn what is most important for you to surround yourself with. Everything you choose; pictures, art work, colors, bedding, etc. reflects who you are or what you want to be when you are home and how you want your guests to feel when they visit.
This eye for detail and design makes perfect sense for someone who understands both the aesthetic and practical side of putting together a home. Ailin took the constraints that presented themselves in her apartment and made them work for her, and she can do the same for you.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Eclectic, forward yet timeless, romantically edgy...
Inspiration: Combining design elements from my travels. Also inspired by my life in NYC and Los Angeles.
Favorite Element: My bold yet cozy bed.
Biggest Challenge: Small space with awkward dimensions and angled walls. Very narrow staircase in my building walk up, so many pieces were undeliverable and I had to start over.
What Friends Say: They love coming over because my apartment is inviting, cozy and feels like a warm refuge from the city. Honestly, I think they like my apartment because they usually get a home cooked meal!
Proudest DIY: Staining my wood shelves.
Biggest Indulgence: Flying my dad out from California to do the apartment improvement projects and getting to spend quality one on one time with him in the process.
Best Advice: Make it comfortable for YOU and connect to your pieces. Don't display everything — reserve a few design treats for yourself.
Dream Sources: Independent furniture designers in Los Angeles, NYC and Buenos Aires. ABC, Brooklyn Flea.

Does anyone know where this silver coffee table is from, or one like it? If so can you email me? rocklandk1@yahoo.com, thanks!
This place is really lovely, peaceful, and seems comfortable. I think you've created a great balance between clean and uncluttered and comfortable and personal. Where is the print of the man and woman from?
Also - I love your dress.
great apartment but not sure I could stand having the A/C right by my head when I'm trying to sleep...love the tall curtains to divide the room
lovely stuff but the pictures nake me dizzy, like fun house mirrors. I'm not sure what lenses were used but they completely distort the porportions.
Awesome place Ailin! Absolutely beautiful dresser! I also really like the corner book shelves...
The coffee table looks like one I spotted at World Market: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12462604
Oddly shaped space but it works. Great kitchen and wonderful windows in the bedroom. I agree that the corner shelves is a great idea. I would like to see more color but that's a personal choice.
Agree re: advert. Plus the bad English, even if inspired by Apple, would inspire me to stay away.
Love the BDDW-style brick wall!
30 photos of a studio apartment, and not one of the bathroom!
Love that silver coffee table. She has some really great pieces!
Love the dresser. Looks like a very cozy space.
I really enjoy your home!...nicely done and so pretty and romantic....with earthiness added about..love the dark grey drapes!..oomph! :)
Love this place...why wasn't this in the Small Cool contest? Or if it was I didn't see it...certainly would have had my vote!
The front door seems really wide.
I really like the dresser.
Please tell me where you got the storm trooper print! I love it!
Love the corner shelves. Thanks for the inspiration.
So well done. Congratulations. I would love to live here.
I'm absolutely in love with the texture of the wall. It gives a really earthy vintage feel that I sometimes miss in TriBeCa exteriors. Beautiful!
I too would love that Storm Trooper print after seeing a Warhol inspired Hans Solo at a friends art show (I failed to steal it for fear of being beaten).
Absolutely love your space! Really makes the small apartment work! Does anyone know where the dresser is from?
I'm sorry for the people that post negative or unnecessarily unsupportive comments. If they don't like what they see or have something nice to say, they should just move on, as their opinion really isn't important. Obviously you are happy with your space and that's all that matters! Anyways, I just love that hammered table. What a unique piece, it looks great with the neutral colors of your couch and rug. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm sure friends do feel very welcome in this inviting apartment. Some beautiful furniture pieces and interesting accessories. Love the creative placement of the books. It's hard to have a lot of books in a studio apartment.
The things I can't reconcile: the preponderance of white is a bit icy, the wallpaper in the kitchen that doesn't seem to go with anything else in the place, and the horizontal mirror that, at least here, seems to reflect nothing but the tops of doors.
And why do all the NYC homes in AT have such spartan beds? This one looks like it came from a nunnery, which makes the placement of the sexy nightgown all the odder.
I think this is the first time I am commenting on an apt. This is GREAT! It's so well done, and inspirational. I'm crazy about the corner shelving. So simple, yet such a great idea. I've just moved into and pre war apt in Brooklyn and have been feeling overwhelmed. This apt was just what I needed to see to spur me into action. Love it.
@Jukesgirl:
Unfortunately, the white paint is probably out of her control since a lot of Manhattan rentals won't allow you to paint the walls a color. Although, the bedroom color is looking a little lavender to me in some photos...not sure if that's just the lighting.
As for the beds in NYC being huge...is it possible that NYC apartments are just so small that the beds look really large in proportion to the rest of the space? So many people move here from all over the place that I bet a lot of people are just trying to fit a bed they already own into a smaller space than they had before.
I think she did a really nice job with a studio apartment. Those can be really tricky to divide and this was well done!
Love this apartment. Wonderful art works, too.
great space --well done ! so many nice details and the kitchen is so so cute. nice backsplash wall and what a great bed.
I love your bursts of blue in the main room w/ the chair seat and the vase--maybe add a bit more of it around the couch, some pillows or something on the wall? I love mirrors but they can be tricky in placement in what they are reflecting.
**I have to laugh at the person who commented at the size of the front door of a rented apartment--really??
Nice space. Just wondering...why the dress over the bed??
Cute and neat home. Love the kitchen!
Very cute space, yes, always bed around windows, it's pretty. All of it is great, I would like to have a friend with a place like that in NY; how do you feel about Santa Fe?
That pop-art storm trooper print is very unexpected I love it.
The dresser there looks like it's the printmaker's sideboard from Restoration Hardware.
I actually have this piece and while the look of it is great, you should know beforehand that it has to be scrubbed down before using! I'm not sure if it's the finishing process of it or what, but mine was pretty filthy.
I wonder if anyone else - Aili - has ever had this kind of problem with new furniture - especially if it's made from reclaimed wood?
Where did you purchase the magazine rack in the bedroom area? Thanks.
Ailin, your home is warm & cozy. Love the mix of real, colorful elements you've used ... efficient, yet beautiful storage (gasp! at that beautiful hammered storage table, distressed dresser, corner shelves, etc.). I have a couple of questions:
Is your sofa slip-covered?
Where/what is the source for your gorgeous cutting boards?
Hey Allin - so great to see you on here! Just moved back from Miami. Place looks great! Love, Brian
