Over Thanksgiving dinner, we spent some time rehashing old stories and learning new things about our family. One of those stories was about Alan Campbell, my stepfather-in-law's uncle who passed away a couple of years ago. Alan was a fabric designer, and I looked him up later that evening. I was so happy to find some designs from the 1970s that I recognized from the pages of design magazines!
Alan's fabrics are simple, geometric designs inspired by African batik prints. They're classic patterns that have appeared in the pages of Domino
and House Beautiful
- I even found some examples in clippings I'd saved! It made the world feel very small to know that my extended family included someone whose life's work has unknowingly influenced me. It also reminded me of the ever-present power of design, and its subtle way of translating through generations.
