Name: Alec (the first Apartment Therapy LA editor!) & David
Location: New York, New York
This is the apartment I share with my fiance David. It's a one bedroom (about 550 square feet) in Hell's Kitchen. The apartment has a few amazing aspects (a little back yard! Really tall ceilings!) and some not so great ones (a tiny bedroom that can only fit a double bed! No closets!) Luckily, the amazing aspects far outweigh the not so great ones.
This apartment was all about two people falling in love, moving in together and EDITING. My favorite example of this would be the melding of the CB2 dining tables we each had, where we took the base of my white table and the wood top of David's and made our own faux-Saarinen version. The Wishbone chairs are from my childhood home, and are pulled to the table when extra seating is needed. The desk is a simple DIY: a plank of wood covered with some rattan wallpaper remnant David had, placed on some cheap sawhorse legs. We painted out the wood trim on the windows in a glossy black to contrast the taupe walls. The rug is an outdoor mat so it's easy to keep clean while still fitting the style of the room. We removed the living room and bedroom doors, and hung heavy curtains to gain space (best trick ever).
The kitchen is a New York City marvel in that it is quite big, which is great because we both cook and we do lots of entertaining (pic doesn't show the full space). The little secretary desk is another family heirloom, and has been stripped and repainted at least a dozen times since I've had it. I made the french ribbon board that holds important mail as well as revolving photos, postcards and notes.
The tiny bedroom came with a poorly built-in wall of storage (which is why the bedroom is so small). When the thought of ripping it down and building a proper closet became too price prohibitive, We put up a rod and made long drapes in a chocolate velvet to hide everything. We are lucky that we are two grown men who seem to do fine in our little double bed! I DIY-ed the headboard. The little mirror side table was a crazy-cheap Target find- I think we paid less than $70 for it. Flor tiles in Dusty Turquoise and Chartreuse help cozy the space.
The backyard is still a work in progress, but it serves as an extra room during warmer months (although the pesky "no-see-um" bugs tend to keep me away). David takes his tea and computer out there every morning. It is beyond quiet and, if nothing else, it's always great to be able to look out the window and see something other than a city street.
Thanks Alec & David!

What a lovely home. I love all of your creative ideas- switching up the table top and base, etc. Thank you for sharing!
gorgeous. really impressive diy.
Nice to see that stylish kitchen in a Manhattan apartment, and a nice table -- a proper place to sit and eat (so many people have no space & end up at the coffee table, which is sad.) I like the feel of this place--it has a mellow ambiance -- great textures too.
I absolutely love this. Especially the very first photo with the grey walls and white curtains. This is the same look I am going for in remodeling our bedroom now. I am so truly inspired by this room! Do you mind me asking, what paint color is that? I also love the glossy black window trim. It's absolutely gorgeous! This entire home shouts of creativity and true love. It is sexy, romantic, relaxing, sophisticated, and fantastic all around. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! So happy for you both! May you have a lifetime of joy and happiness! Much love from Astoria, Queens.
What are the lovely paint colors in your dining room and bedroom?
As attractive as it all is, my eye flew right to the dining area wall-mounted wing-arm lamp over the table. I wondered if it was a Prouve cantilever light or the Flos light... but it's neither. Please: more information about the light? I have a similar situation with no possibility of an overhead light, and the number of candles necessary to see the meal would preclude anyplace for food. I agree with an earlier comment - the gray walls and white fabric at the window are tremendously handsome.
A correction to my query above: "swing-arm" not wing-arm, although I suppose it's possible...
Utterly gorgeous! I love the sumptuous feel without it looking cluttered or overstyled. It strikes a perfect, elegant note. Would love to see more pics of the kitchen area and garden.
Hey all, thanks for the kind words! PAINT COLORS: The living room is Pratt & Lambert AC655 (I believe it was called "Putty") and the bedroom is a few shades lighter up the swatch (AC 657). And Honest Day-the sconce is from Restoration Hardware. I was a bit obsessed with it. I wrote all about my obsession here. Xo.
This apartment is infused with love and warmth. I love it! Congrats to both of you for blending your lives and style into something so gracious. I admit it - your color choices are the ones I have in my own home so I'm predisposed to love it. But it feels spacious, elegant and Jo,eu all at once.
You had me at the backyard. I would forgo my queen sized bed to have a backyard attached to my studio apartment.
One word: SEXY!
This is simply stunning. I'm adding to the echo chamber here, but I can't help it-- it's warm, elegant, and above all totally sexy. And how great is Hell's Kitchen? It was the first place I lived when I moved to the city, and will always be one of my favorite neighborhoods.
Thanks for sharing, fellas. When do we get to see the rest?!
Totally gorgeous! And a tantalising peek - more please!!
I'd love to see more of the kitchen!
You guys have a great color sense, and your place is so warm and inviting. I am drawn to that cantivaliered light over the dining table! It's amazing.
Thank you for getting back to us so quickly about the paint color! I was dying to know. And once again, best of luck on your upcoming nuptials!
xoxo

This feels so cozy-comfy and personalized without feeling cluttered or even cramped. Nice job! Would love to see a full tour.
I think this calls for a House Tour!
What a great place! It's stylish without being a slave to trends. Chic!
love the candid last shot. Gorgeous. House tour please!
Brave to live in Hell's Kitchen (Times Square area)! That place is so congested & touristy.
