Name: Eva? Eli?
Location: Austin, TX
This nursery is for our adoption from Uganda! We are waiting for a referral for a boy or girl 12 months to 3 years! So that was the first hurdle to overcome when designing this space...hmm...what gender will it be??
Don't worry...I have plenty more hurdles...
1. We rent this cute 1940s bungalow, which is wonderful and in a pretty hip Austin neighborhood...however...we RENT. Need I say more?
2. We had a very limited budget to create this room...i.e. NO budget. Since most of our extra money was and still is going towards the high adoption costs! but OH-SO-WORTH-IT.
3. My own obsessive-compulsive issues.
• Dresser: Craigslist find from IKEA
• Bed: recycled from one of our twin boys...I hate that color so will probably be painting it some crazy color
• Chair: knockoff Bertoia style chair with DwellStudios for Target throw pillow
• Baskets on wall are from Uganda
• Prints are from Etsy
• Sheep skin rugs are from IKEA
• My favorite: the mobile I made from branches from our ranch in Colorado where I spent my summers as a child and is a very dear place to us!
• Carpet = HORRIBLE but we're renting so what can you do?
• Walls: Benjamin Moore's "Gray Horse" paint
Thanks Ali! And good luck!

I have that dresser (sans the cute chalkboard paint) and use it as a changing table - it's been great. Curious kids may make it dangerous because it'd be tough to childproof the drawers, but my daughter hasn't really messed with it.
Best of luck to y'all!
Congrats! Very nice! Love the crib, mobile, dresser with chalkboard paint. Nicely done! We rent too so I understand those challenges.
Hi! I adore the way you have hung the branches as a mobile. I would love to know how you attached them to the wall!
thank you! :)
MAMACITAMAHNS - actually they are hanging from the ceiling...I just used illusion cord (it's invisible wire like string used in jewelry making) and then tied the cords up to white ceiling hooks! It was actually pretty easy! But instead of having like one point on the ceiling for the branches to hang from, I have about four spots so they are all individually hung to create a bigger look if that makes sense. :)
That will be one lucky baby. It's a stylish and thoughtfully designed room. That zebra print is the best!
Good luck.
:)
This is a very cool room. I love the mobile and all the thoughtful (and stylish) nods to Uganda. And I think you've succeeded in making a tryly gender-neutral room. I did not know what the gender of either of my (biological) children would be either. I found I added more feminine touches when my daughter was born and more masculine things for my son. I hope you'll send an update once your little one arrives!
Ditto EK76, all the Uganda touches are really wonderful. I love that mobile so much that I'm pretty sure I'm gonna copy it! What exactly are the colorful doodads hanging from it and how did you attach them?
Thanks AT peeps:
LINNYBEE: it's actually a star garland thingy that I got at a fair trade store in Cali. I cut it up and hung it from the branches. Otherwise I'm not sure what I would hang from them??
I will update once we have our precious one...probably be awhile unfortunately! And knowing me, will be different!
Thanks Ali. Good luck with your little one. Looking at the effort you put into the nursery, I'm sure they are going to be so loved.
The mobile is very unique, I love it! And my son has the same abacus :) Though I hung it on his wall as art. I have a photo on my blog. http://youngnesters.blogspot.com/2011/11/darwins-nursery.html
Great job, Ali! Love this room. We too are waiting parents and have the same challenge of designing a gender-neutral nursery. You’ve done a beautiful job of blending those little touches acknowledging Ugandan heritage and also pieces of your own childhood and history. Decorating a nursery is a great way to distract you during the interminable “waiting” that is adoption. Hope you took lots of ‘before’ pics so that you can one day show these to your child as part of the story of your excitement as you waited for his or her arrival. Best of luck for a speedy referral!
Oh its so lovely! Good luck on your adoption journey, he or she is going to be a lucky kiddo!! I'd love to see a follow up with pictures of the new munchkin enjoying his or her room!!
(Sorry, think I went a little exclamation point crazy... I REALLY hope to adopt some day so adoption stories always get me extra excited!)
I love this room. So sweet how you incorporated Uganda.
