How do people live green in their everyday life? What motivates and inspires them? In Re-Nest's new column, Creative People, Living Green, I interview interesting people I meet to find out their habits, thoughts, creative pursuits, business ventures, and green living wisdom.
Alissa and Leela, co-founders of Bright Designlab, are interior and graphic designers who have recently launched an upcycled furniture line. Inspired by bold graphics, color and the reclaimed wood found at various local sites, their unique pieces are visually striking and very practical. A perfect marriage of fashion and function!! More photos below:
Bright Designlab shares a space with Hammer and Hand, a green remodeling company. This partnership enables Bright Designlab to dream up pieces, while Hammer and Hand produces the furniture. Alissa and Leela's talent for in seeing potential in materials such as old lockers, barnyard wood, industrial metals and school bleachers is uncanny. To think that such sleek, graphic, contemporary pieces come from such a cacophony of disparate elements, it's inspiring.
Their shelves and tables can be found in local shops and restaurants, creating a dynamic flow and style within each unique space. Their furniture is inventive, artistic and refreshingly different — in an era where farm house tables are so popular, it's wonderful to see reclaimed wood and interesting materials being spun into something more modern. It's also encouraging to see that treading lightly on the Earth, working with materials destined for landfills and junkyards and spinning what already exists into exquisite furniture and concepts.

What does a typical day look like?
Early morning: wrap up all current communications from the day before (still in PJ's) Mid morning: head for the retail studio, have office meeting with my cohort, make sure studio is in order, smooth skirt, sit up straight and wait. Okay, not really, there is not much waiting going on! Most of the day: Meld brains with Leela on ongoing projects, meet with new clients, and often, photographing finished projects for other designers. All the time: Think of new ways to propel.
The term "green living" can be so generic. What does it mean to you?
Living life thoughtfully, and teaching the next generation.
What inspires you?
Life. Feeding people, both in stomach and in mind.
The one thing you can't live without:
Cheese. Steel. Wanderlust. Thesaurus. Oh wait that's 4.
Favorite quote or personal mantra you live by?
"Work hard and be nice to people" - Anthony Burrill... followed by "you never know."
