When we used to refer to quilting, we'd think of our aunts or grandmothers that would sew dainty patterns and overly decorated textiles together for babies to pass along to their future children. The sentiment is still there, but her whole design approach is entirely 21st Century.
Alissa started a modern quilting guild that now has affiliate groups all over state and has published a 1 book. I can imagine that creating detailed handmade quilts could be very inspiring in such a bright and cheerful room. Her sewing machine, needles, and all her fabrics organized by color — each take up important corners of the room. She takes full advantage of all the tall walls for inspiration boards and for laying out patterns. It's quite serene and peaceful yet cheerful and fun!

I LOVE the fold out sewing kit with legs... what's it called and/or where did it come from?
So jealous! I wish I could magically add this room to our otherwise wonderful 1bedroom apartment. Someday, I will have this!
Ditto Dre -- I want one of those fold-out boxes for my art studio! Do you have any sources for them?
Oh I neeeeed that fold out sewing storage! Please someone source it!!!
Check craigslist or you local thirft stores. I'm pretty sure everybodys' grandmother or great grandmother had at least 2 of them.
Hi All, thanks for the kind words about my sewing space. Unfortunately I'm no help about the sewing box... I literally found it all beat up on the side of the street. I took it home, refinished it, lined it with a pretty paper and added some nice knobs from Anthropologie. With a little elbow grease it became something I'll have for years!
love the space and I checked out the pix of the quilts on flickr: absolutely, stunningly beautiful.

Wow - so helpful Xtina - thank you!
That cool sewing kit would be a great art tool box, too!
Must be a pleasure to work in here: so organized, bright and spacious. Great job!
I got a sewing box at a thrift store for $5 and wanted to know more about it so I looked it up on E-bay. There are a ton for sale on E-bay. It's also a great jewelry box.
What is that item clamped onto the Asian looking box with the 15 compartments?
I am working on a quilt today in my little Manhattan 1 bedroom so this post makes me drool. I have to move furniture around to pin baste!
ArtsyGirl: The bird clamped to the box is what my mom always calls a "sewing bird". It is meant to help with hand sewing. You clamp it on the table next to you and it holds your fabric in it's beak which helps while you sew. Kinda like having a third hand!
And Tracey - oh I feel your furniture moving pin basting pain! At my old place I had to do that all the time, and in this space for a quilt bigger than a throw I have to as well. Good luck!
Thanks for the post...
Nice combination of old and new elements, all adding up to a fresh space for quilting. After all, with all that light and space, the creative process of quilting can happen so much more easily...
That sewing box or kit, can often be found in an estate sale, generally for a fairly inexpensive price...
Here's a sources for finding an estate sale in your area...

I inherited all of my Grandmother's sewing things and that sewing box happened to be one of the things. I love it! Glad to see it in use somewhere else!
Beautiful space! Where did you find the great wooden stool?
Hi e.b.m - My husband and I bought a set of four of those stools at a vintage shop here in LA a few years ago.
Love the way you have arranged your space. I also have a Horizon 7700. Where did you purchase your sewing table?
drool
bjmp - I do loooove my Horizon so! It's improved sewing for me enormously. I got my table at IKEA. It's the super affordable kind where you just get the top and legs separately. It serves my purposes but I'd love one that my machine goes down into.
Where do you get your fabrics? Love your space--so much light! And the sewing bird--love.
Thank you!
I get my fabrics all over the place. A lot online but here in LA I get them at Sew Modern and Michael Levine.
