- Inspiration for my palette:
- I loved the idea of grey walls as a classic neutral background for our 1,000 sq ft loft with 14 ft ceilings. While the loft has a very industrial and modern feel, I wanted to warm it up and add the character with a "traveled feel" to the space. The rust colored couches bring a sense of drama to the space while the striped rug which incorporates the rust, greens, cream and khaki tones pulls the room together. I wanted to use the pillows to add textures and to layer the neutral, warm palette.
- Colors used in my room
- Grey, Creams, Browns, Rust, Muted Green
- Tips for using color successfully
- I love neutral colors, but it's important to contrast them in such a way that keeps the space interesting. A neutral color palette can easily become boring unless you're layering colors and tones of the colors to add depth to the space. This layering effect will draw people in and make them want to soak up the cozy space.

I really like the worn leather couch. I made a really similar map (for free)!!

What's the name of the gray? It looks like it has a blue tint to it.
Your glass front door scares me but your space if really pretty. Love that soft blue on the wall.
@LyonStill - that actually looks like a back door, judging from the concrete and the rail.
Thanks for your comments! @Interiors by Kenz- The grey is Cement Grey from Martha Stewart. It really depends on the time of day as to the shade it appears to be. In person, it actually has more of a warm undertone... you can pick up hints of brown... again, the time of day makes a difference as well. I'm so jealous you made your map! Great idea!
@LyonStill & @Pi- It is actually the back door leading out onto our small patio. There actually isn't a building right next door, so I'm not too worried about the neighbors peering in. We do have blinds that cover the entire wall of windows that we pull down at night. I wouldn't want to live in place that didn't have some privacy! Thanks again for your comments!!
Wonderful! Love the setup with the twin mirrors. :-)
Love these colors and LOVE this room!!!!
This room is gorgeous - love the mix of textures, especially the leather couch and the wooden map above. Also love the slightly "blue" tone in the gray walls.
The couches. Where do they come from?
I'm really digging that map. Very pretty gray on the walls too...
I love how the coolness of the gray balances the warmth of the furniture. Great!
Thanks @realsupportva, @500 Square, @Nancy33Cats and @Tracy333! @Cooper_black- the couches were actually given to us, so I'm not sure where they're from. I noticed some similar ones at Pottery Barn though... http://www.potterybarn.com/shop/furniture-upholstery/sofas/turner-sofas/ Hope this helps!
Love the color on the walls. It looks like the same or a similar shade I painted my bedrooms. Very peaceful and easy to work with color
Love that wall map. Can you tell us where you got it?
Hi @makeupchik- I agree! It's a great color that seems to go with a lot of different colors! @MaddyT- I found it at World Market! :)
Good Luck Allie and Gabe!
You have a great eye. the cool and light floor and wall colors are amazing. I love the subtle pop of the couch and love seat.
i am a house painter and use almost exclusively sherwin williams paint, this is a great looking room! this color works with its space and enhances its surroundings. i also love the map and feel that the aged look of it as well as the couch look great together. sure looks like a comfy couch to crash on or to curl up and read a good book. not to get too allegorical but this makes me think of the scriptures in Matthew 11:28 "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest". this is a very peaceful place and it has my vote!
I love this room. It has a really cozy feel, and Allie's done a great job of furnishing it. It's hard to make lofts feel as homey because of exposed brick and metal beams, but this space does NOT have that problem. And Allie is obviously very detail-oriented, in the best possible way.
Allie did an amazing job on this room. I love the color palate!
Love Love Love this room!
I really like how light, airy and homey it seems while still being fashionable! The shade of paint on the wall is neutral without being a "boring, traditional neutral". Love it!!
My living room was entered in the International Division so I have followed the contest closely this year. Is it always so controversial?
First of all, congratualtions to all the finalists. I voted for a couple, but not all of them and, while they are beautiful rooms, none were my first choice in their category. I did not personally expect to win and was thrilled just to be included in the competition. I felt that there were rooms superior to mine but it was still fun to watch the votes and read the comments.
AT's motives for allowing voting are obvious and I happen to agree with them. It's fun and encourages many people (who are mainly observers) to become engaged and post comments and generally interact with this community. It is also a brilliant way to draw in more readers.
Obviously the Bloggers have an edge but they were well within the rules to advertise on their blogs and wouldn't we all do that if we could? Perhaps if this is a really issue for many readers (and it seems to have hurt some feelings and ruffled some feathers) AT will consider a panel of designer or "expert" judges in the future, while still allowing reader voting and prizes for "Reader's Picks"... Win-win?
Congratulations in making it into the final. In the spirit of fairness I'd like to let you know that at least one of you (the final contestants) is publicly asking people to vote three times for their room (telling people to use email, facebook and twitter). You know who you are. I have asked Apartment Therapy a number of times whether you can vote for a room more than once. They never answered my question and just referred me to the contest page. On the contest page it states:
Contest Schedule
9/24 — Submission Forms open.
10/1 — Selected entries will begin to be posted. Readers may respond by choosing their favorite entries. Readers may mark as many entries as they like as favorites during this period. Readers may mark each entry as a favorite only once.....
I don't know whether this is an official rule or how they would enforce it. Anyway just wanted to let everyone know that this is going on. Can't tell you if it's against the rules to vote 3 times, or even tell you if it's against the rules to tell anyone to vote 3 times. It's a mystery.
FYI to everyone following the contest: There's no mystery! The contest rules are being followed and we have been watching the voting carefully. Thanks very much for your entries, votes and feedback in the comments - we appreciate it and will keep it in mind as we plan future contests.
Janel, see you didn't answer my question again. According to the official rules are you allowed to vote 3 times for a room? YES or NO?
Whoa, hateful! People like what they like. Also, this winner will be using her prize as a selfless donation to her community. What good deeds have you done today?
Beautiful room, Allie! It seems very relaxing!
Hi all,
Just checked back here. "Only once" means just that - once. If you are interested in more detailed info on voting, the best source is the rules section, linked from the contest page.
Congratulations Allie! Love the room!
Just love this
I absolutely love the room.
