Unplggd reader Alonso sent us a DIY audio speaker solution which brought music into his bathroom with a handsome finish that would make any shower or bath a more relaxing (or exciting) time accompanied by the music now available. Here's how he did it...
I wanted music in the bathroom (and in every room in the house) and the old portable radio wouldn't cut it.
I already had a Sonos system running at home so the source of the music was sorted. It only took buying another ZP120 (amplified Sonos) which is kept in another room. The loudspeaker is a special unit made by Monitor Audio for damp environments C180-T2) but the great bit about it is that its a 'stereo-in-one' (the tweeters pivot for an attempt at sound dispersion) Not that stereo is a issue or needed but there are no more 'mono' amps out there, so it solves the issue to listening only to one of the channels!
I used half of the towel cabinet and built a proper speaker box for it with 18mm MDF, foam lined and with inner bracings, the works. Its amazing to shower with a bass line! ha! Anyway, I wired it from there to the living room where the Sonos box is kept (all wiring ran under the floor board).

It's a great install and neat innovation with placing the speaker in the closet. I'm just curious why Alonso didn't install the speaker in the ceiling as opposed to canceling out valuable storage space?
Hi Ebinal.
Fair comment. Actually, my first choice was the ceiling but the structural beams that run across it (in-between the first and the second floor) ran too close together to allow for the speaker to fit in, so that was a no-no. Besides, I could 'control' the dimensions/design of the loudspeaker box much better, and hence a better sound, plus the wiring was easier (a combination of factors as you can see) But yes, it was sacrificing precious space in our shoe-box sized house for the sake of simplicity (and music) ....
