Headboards can make a grand statement in a bedroom, but sometimes either size or budget constraints can make adding on a challenge. I was first exposed to a painted headboard while attending the AIA Los Angeles house tours and most recently, I've seen examples of wall decals being used as headboards. If you are designing the bedroom on a tight budget, $40 for a headboard wall decal versus a couple hundred dollars or more for a more traditional headboard can make a huge difference.

SIIIIGH* We used to have the wrought iron headboard in red and recently had to take it down in order to re-arange the room to create more space. It was one of the hardest decisions I had to make so far this year! Maybe I'm dramatic, but the empty space in my heart says otherwise. I miss that thing so much! FANTASTIC!
Better make sure you're never going to move the bed from that spot on the wall...
...or you could take your $40 and find a real vintage headboard in a garage sale, flea market or on Craigslist and paint it to fit your space.
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
I love that blanket at the end of the bed in the first picture. does anyone know where its from?
In regards to the decal headboards, idk it just doesn't seem to work for me. I don't like it.
I really hope this decal/silhouette fad is over soon. These look awful. It reminds me of the sponge painted stencil boarders that were all the craze in the 90's when I was growing up. I didn't like it then, either. I would, however, LOVE that red wrought iron one if it actually real.
I think these are great alternatives if you don't have the space/budget for a headboard. But I really appreciate the functional aspect, which is that I can lean against the headboard without pushing my bed away from the wall. Additionally, headboards protect the wall from things like wear and staining (super cheap sheets dyed the wall AND ME).
I honestly have a love/hate relationship with headboards (big, bulky, annoying to move but so functional), so I love the idea of a decal to just give the look. I too have walls with texture so I'm not sure this will work, and the one I want required multiple people to install. I do love the look of them though.
Years ago my cousin bought a foreclosed bungalow with the furniture left behind. When they were filling the dumpster, they realized the tenants had painted around the headboard of the bed. Similar effect.
If you must have one of these, become a fan of Blik on Facebook, these very items were 15% off one day last week to fans.
I move my bed way too much for something like this, but I think they're really cute-- for now.
The decal is a good idea for a dorm room.
I'm undecided about these stencils. I think in a kid's room or a dorm they'd be great.
I'm with bepsf for once - I'd rather take the money I'd spend on paint and try to find the headboard I want on craigslist or in a thrift store. Nothing else, sit back that money and add to it until I can afford it.
I wouldn't mind trying it, just because I want something above my bed that's light visually and physically. Like a lot of other readers, I just don't have the space for a headboard unless it's less than an inch thick. It's cheekily conceptual--a suggestion or a representation of a headboard--as well as really graphic, which I always appreciate.
But having said all this, I might just buy a pair of square Euro pillows and some nice tailored shams.
I like decals more than painting. The latter feels too permanent for me -- if you ever move things around, you're in for a lot more work.
I did something like this in our bedroom--but much more geometric. I like the look of headboards with open space--spindles, lattice, etc--but I hate the feel of leaning against them. This was a good way to have our bed be a bit more of a focal space, but still be able to lean against the wall comfortably. I also did it with paint and tape on hand--so an effectively free project!
You can see it here, if you're interested.
Oops, here's the link I meant to post in. Long day :-) http://secretcityranch.blogspot.com/search/label/master%20bedroom
The first time I saw the painted-on headboard was in a log cabin in the Tetons 40 years ago. Apparently it was a pioneer custom. Anyway, the reason I like a headboard is so that when I sit up in bed, the bed doesn't push away from the wall. So a fake headboard doesn't work for me at all.
This is about the red metal (I think?) bed in the second image. It's great! Anybody know what it is/where you can get it?
A platform bed will never push away from the wall...
