This is kind of exciting! While Jean Nouvel's plans for a 73-story MoMA tower are being reviewed by New York City's Urban Land Use Review Process, architecture firm Axis Mundi has proposed a new concept for the space on 53rd Street. Axis Mundi wants to rethink the idea of a skyscraper and their concept for a vertical neighborhood highlights the possibilities of a diverse community and physical environment...
The Axis Mundi proposal is intriguing — the design allows for expression of the diverse range of interior functions, rather than hiding them all behind a glass facade — hotels, homes, offices and new MoMA galleries are connected in a wide variety of possible floor plans that leave options for various balconies, terraces and public outdoor spaces. I personally love the arcade that creates an open space connecting 53rd and 54th streets!
New Yorkers should check the Axis Mundi proposal out on Dezeen: Alternative Design for MoMA Tower at 53 West 53rd by Axis Mundi.
