Q: I am *in love* with the de Sede DS-2000 reclining sofa but just realized it has a $50,000 price tag, placing it completely out of my universe of consideration. I'd really like to get a modern looking reclining sofa with a smaller footprint, that doesn't look like a two overstuffed chairs glued together. Any ideas about similar-looking products? I know you did a piece on lazy-boy type chairs a while back, but I really need help for a sofa or couch.

Nomade Express Slee...
Did you make some kind of a price conversion error? I just checked my sources, and it is around $8000 to $10,000. Pricey, but in the range I would expect.
Stressless sofas maybe? Still not cheap though. But super comfortable.

Does anyone else think it looks like an Imperial Storm Trooper?
that's one of the ugliest couches I've seen.
I would pay $50,000 for a Storm Trooper.
I would not pay anything for this couch. Or an even uglier knock off.
I think it is "an hommage" to Vico Magistretti's 1973 sofa, the Maralunga. (they are deliciously comfortable)

AT used to delete mean comments... (*cough*, *cough*)
@mschatelaine Comments have to be pretty bad before they are deleted. People expressing their opinion on how ugly/beautiful this couch is and their personal feelings on its worth are theirs to express.
This is a pretty ugly couch. I think a good alternative would be three or four mobile homes that you could then rent out. Possibly buy one or two fully furnished mobile homes. That's how expensive a $50,000 couch is.
Alternatives? Isn't the whole point of owning a $50k sofa to impress all your friends with how much your sofa cost?

I like this. It also comes in dark brown and dark grey. Our couch is to' up, we are pitching it, and when the bed is out of the living room (surgery recovery on the horizon), we are going to replace it with one of these.
It is from Target, so has none of the snob appeal of the storm trooper couch, but I've seen it live, and it is refreshingly small- so many current couches are Shrek sized that I was delighted to find something to fit our small living room.
It folds down, easily, into a twin bed. The arm cushions aren't fastened down at all, and the seat and back are one giant hinged piece so there's no cushions to shove back into place.
And it is $49,771 cheaper than the storm trooper couch, so there's that.
Ugh some people are so nasty...
Maybe a pair of Flight Recliners by DWR? They're a bit expensive too, but in the same vein.

OR, you could get a very basic minimalist love seat and one of the flight recliners to achieve a similar effect.
I have to agree that I found this sofa pretty ugly. Though, it is much nicer in the reclining position.
Anyway, this is probably way far from where you want to go, but I think its in line with the modern/contemporary feel of what you going for, it plenty bulky.

Honestly I think a very similar couch could be made by covering plywood with padding and fabric and constructing some very basic cushions. You'd need to be a little more handy to get it to recline, but it could still be done
This whole thread made me crack up! Storm trooper couch... LOL
It's not a $50K couch; there's a currency conversion error happening...
Secondly, that's not an ugly couch.
I've sat on plenty of De Sede couches in my years in Switzerland, and they are not ugly. Sober, yes; ugly, no.
Personally, I find the Maralunga (in velour) to be a cushier, more comfortable and more beautiful design. Just get an ottoman for your legs.
Thirdly, I've been here many years, and AT's deletion philosophy has oscillated wildly -- I've seen very mild comments be deleted, and quite uncalled-for comments remain. However, I have noticed that those who leave such comments are often eventually erased from AT.
The comments on this board are insulting and juvenile. These are the sorts of comments I expect middle school and high school kids to say. The poster did not ask for our aesthetic opinion of her chosen design; she merely asked for suggestions on similar, less expensive, possible alternatives.
So as inviting as it might sound to fire off an insult you find to be particularly quippy, in the interests of common decency, please restrain yourself.
Yeah, you guys are right. I shouldn't have hurt the couch's feelings by calling it ugly . . .
It's an opinion of the couch, not you. People aren't being juvenile when they express their opinion.
I've also been a member here for many years, and I leave a fair number of snarky comments. I've found that as long as they add to the discussion, and are worded in a humorous way, people are generally allowed to express their opinion, even if someone finds their feelings hurt by it. From reading through the posts here, there's nothing even remotely close to breaking the comment policy.
Ugly couch is ugly.
AT's four rules for comments:
1. Be honest and fair, yet gracious.
2. No ad hominem attacks or gratuitous meanness.
3. Stay on topic.
4. Add value, don't take it away.
Let's see how these comments stack up...
1. Gracious?? Uh, no.
2. If I were the person posting the question, I would feel the comments to be mean -- gratuitously mean.
3. On topic? Nope.
4. Add value? Pray tell, how do all the snarky storm trooper jokes add value?
Not to make this into some debate . . . but I'll take a stab.
1. Honest? yep. Gracious? Nobody has said they hate anyone for liking it.
2. A person can hate the couch all they want and not be gratuitously mean because furniture does not have feelings.
3. "Looks like a storm trooper" is more on topic than a post about the comment policy.
4. I saw a few follow up jokes to the storm trooper comment. That's more value than getting offended and debating the comment policy.
Not to be misunderstood as being ungracious, we all still like you and value your opinion of the couch. It's good to see all the people who like (and hate) the couch. That's why the comment box is here. Storm trooper comment is an insight that not everyone would see, and now others may see it too, or not.
Hmm, I like this couch. And stormtroopers. I would buy this couch with the spare 8k I keep under my current couch's cushions, but not with the 50k I keep in the mattress. I would use a funny stormtrooper voice for everything I said as long as I was sitting on this stormtrooper couch. :)
Actually, since no one followed up "couch is ugly" with "why would you want it" I guess they aren't too mean.
EXCEPT for medusa12120 - that was a low blow internet person!

::ring ring:: The 1980s just called... They want their "ultramodern" couch back.
If the storm troopers had a break room this would be their couch.
Also, I feel like the arms of the couch would open up and it would fly.
