- What I Love About My Small Home:
- The high ceilings and abundance of natural light give the apartment a bright and airy feel. I love my quiet neighborhood near downtown DC, and my view of the elegant rowhouses and elm trees that line my street. The art and tokens from my travels make the apartment feel both nostalgic and worldly. I have some great neighbors downstairs (hey Des!), including my best friend since junior high. I really couldn’t ask for anything more.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- My two tiny closets can’t handle my extensive shoe and accessory collection, so I turned my entryway into a shoe/purse closet, and hung my jewelry on the wall.

I can tell you're a girl who loves her shoes, bags, and jewelry and you've done a good job making space for them that also doubles as art. That little foldable IKEA chair at your kitchen table? Gotta go! I speak from experience, having just stored mine away for company and moving to real kitchen chairs. Really makes a difference in how I feel sitting down for meals. I'm happier to linger, eat slower, and engage in more dinner conversation.
I love how you spread out your art.
I love these challenging little spaces! I always get inspired, even if I have twice the space!
Really cute! But from what it looks like, there's an awkward open space between the sofa and bed, so that when you're sitting on the sofa, you're looking at the bed. Not that there's anything wrong with that ('cause the bed is sooo pretty), but I do wonder if you have a TV. Doesn't look like it, though not everyone needs one, I guess.
I personally hate futons, but your space is nice. My goodness your oven is tiny though!! I like how you made your accessories part of the "look"
have you seen these great shoe cabinets from Ikea? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50178171/
Offers skinny storage great for entryways like this but without seeing shoes and added bonus of being able to display something on the top.
Why isn't there a picture of the bathroom?
Cute and pretty! I just love all the colorful, eclectic accents!
I've been considering that futon but it's only available by online ordering where I live--how do you like it?
I am not a big fan of shoes on show not even if you have great ones. I would hide them if I was you.
I love your petite vanity. I keep wishing I could make the picture bigger so I can see all the details.
Wow! I absolutely love this space!! It looks so cozy without looking crowded and I wish I could curl up in it!! I also love the displayed accessories as others have already commented, you turned your unique challenge into a work of art!
i can empathize with storage issues, but i'm not sure you've solved the shoe/purse issue in a design-contest-worthy manner. with those high ceilings and a fair amount of empty floor space in the living room, i'm sure you can come up with something better!
for me, this place is small/alright... and not really small/cool.
Thanks for the compliments and suggestions!
@wittycassiehere- I do have a TV. It is in the bookcase. I only watch DVDs on it, so it works for my purposes.
@popsicle- The futon is OK. I got it because I was on a grad school budget and I have people staying with me all the time. If you have the money you might want to get something nicer, but if you need something cheap this is a good deal.
@andreajane- Thanks, I'm proud of my vanity! I made it by putting that vintage mirror on a small table with a drawer!
Love the bedsheets, where are they from?
Weird but it's home!
Amazing! Love the place and love the description. Definitely rose to the challenge of DC apartment living
AMANDITACARINA, Thanks much for the honest answer! It looks great, but I'll be for an elderly aunt to sleep on during a month long visit, so she might not like it.
@JOANNA86 Thanks, the bedding is from Anthropologie
@Popsicle You're welcome! Yeah, the futon probably is not up to elderly aunt standards :)
Your place is interesting looking. I would cover that brown bookcase thing in the entry way with wallpaper or paint it a nice color or something. If you are going to display your shoes, you should probably have a little nicer shoe racks.
