Wednesday marked Amazon's 20th anniversary, and the debut of Prime Day, 24 hours of sales targeted toward Prime members. Despite some consumer complaints that the deals were a letdown, the company calls the event a success, and will make it an annual tradition.
Amazon said Thursday that shoppers ordered 398 items per second, surpassing the rate of ordering on Black Friday.
‘‘Going into this, we weren’t sure whether Prime Day would be a one-time thing or if it would become an annual event,’’ said Amazon Prime vice president Greg Greeley, as reported by the Boston Globe. ‘‘After yesterday’s results, we’ll definitely be doing this again.’’
