- What I Love About My Small Home:
- We love our small home because it is a reflection of all of our favorite things. There are elements of over-the-top flair like the Union Jack wall and the 10 foot bookcase, balanced with areas of calming blank expanses. We love living in the ever-changing city, but knowing that our home is a low-maintenance haven where creativity can flourish. We don't require a lot of stuff, but the stuff we have counts.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The biggest challenge for us is that we enjoy a lot of hobbies. In our small apartment, we house three bicycles, bicycle mechanics tools, home improvement tools, climbing gear, snowboarding gear, bicycling gear, sewing equipment, a large collection of media, and a delightful collection of books. And we like minimalism. You do the math.

LOVE THIS!!! Your floor plan is even awesome! Is your plywood dining shelf DIY?
I really like this space. My concern is all the heavy items you've attached to the wall. You call this your home so I'm not sure if you own it or rent. If you rent, is the landlord okay with all you've done?
Love the 'british' wall. I initally thought I was looking at a small home in Europe until I read the intro.
Nicely done.
so many dogs!!!!!
Absolutely stunning! But I don't like the idea of the computer held on the wall facing the entrance, all the sunlight is reflected on the screen, so when you're using it you won't be able to see anything!
Hi Everyone, Thank you for all your comments!
Everything in our apartment has mostly been DIY (including the plywood bar and bookshelf).
Lyonstill - we do rent the space, but (as you can see) our landlord is okay with us painting, so with a little drywall repair finesse, we are able to return the space to it's original state. In fact, our landlord loves our apartments (this is the second unit in this building for us) and enjoys showing them to potential renters before we move out.
If anyone is interested in checking out some of my other adventures in DIY and urban living, I write a blog at www.everyday-modern.com. Cheers and thanks for your votes!
I love this place. So fun and full of creativity. It really shows how to deal with the challenges of a small apartment!
I love it... especially since you included a picture of your greyhound! He/she looks just like my Ollie:)
I'm impressed that you have 3 dogs in 600 sq ft. As a dog lover, that makes my heart smile.
Is the snowboarding and sewing stuff in the space underneath the bedroom? I like what you've shown so far.
It looks like the kitchen and bathroom are up a flight of stairs and from the sink area you might be able to overlook the living room? I don't know why but I really like that. It seems like it might make it feel kind of like a loft. Would really love to see a picture of the kitchen and the bathroom area to get a better feel for what that looks like. The only thing that may be a little awkward is using the bathroom in the middle of the night...I might end up with some shin bruises trying to find my way in the dark, other than that, looks like a really cool space!
Favorite! What a fun little space. I love the balance between mellow and silly. There's so much personality here!
Muttnik - we do not have access to the area under the bedroom nor under the stairs. What you see in the floorplan is what we've got. Our snowboarding stuff is stashed under the bed, and the sewing stuff behind the sofa.
Madeittothemoon - We have two greyhounds (Rocco & Fergus) and and Italian greyhound (Stella). And yes, we are all very cozy!
Love the space! You've done a great job with it, and as a fellow cyclist, I can appreciate how hard it is to accommodate bikes in small space!
very cool.... and that is the scariest light i've ever seen over a bed.
This is great! I love that you have hobbies that come with stuff (biking, sewing) and yet still manage to keep your place looking cohesive.
Where do the greys sleep? My one has 3 beds, which is about 1/10 of my total square footage.
Really great -- a ton of character -- I love it!
With there were pictures of the kitchen and bathroom... Wonderful, though.
Your home is great. Love the idea for the minimalist dining area. Is it enough space for both of you to serve/eat a meal? Your dogs are so cute.
Thanks for sharing!
is it a pain to get those bikes down from that high every time you wanna go out or do you not use them that much?
WOW!
you have packed a huge amount of color and style in a pretty small space-excellent job.
very interesting place-kudos!
Gael Gallery - the bikes aren't too bad. We are most often riding the fixie's around town, and my husband's lives in the garage, while mine is on the bottom of the ones we keep in the apartment. When we do get out for longer rides on the road bikes, my husband's is on the very top, and he is tall, so not too big of a deal.
Danielclt - The bar works great for just the two of us having dinner. If we have more guests, our desk rolls away from the wall and we have folding chairs hidden behind the curtains that we pull out. Since the computer is mounted to the wall, it's just a matter of moving the keyboard/mouse, throwing down a table cloth, et voila! The office becomes our dining room!
Favorited for the yellow wall!
Hooray for greyhounds :) fantastic apartment doggehs!
Interesting that the bedroom has a door, but then an open window to the downstairs. Too bad you don't own... you'd be able to put glass in that window so that the bedroom is more private. That way someone could be watching tv downstairs while the other is sleeping in. :)
Was it just me because I live in "earthquake" county (Los Angeles)? I apologize, but I just couldn't enjoy this place because initially I got freaked out when I saw the Kitchenaid standing mixer right at the ledge on the upper floor - one small jolt, and that thing might topple and be toast. I have one and know they're heavy, but still. . .
I love your apartment. Especially the bikes. I use to keep all my bikes in my bedroom; I didn't have a garage at the time. I live in the San Diego Area and I keep my Kitchen Aid mixer on top to my fridge. I grew up in the Bay Area and the frequency of earthquakes in Southern California do not compare. The local news thinks Armageddon is on its way when an earthquake occurs in Southern California, they are few and far between.
so are they British?
Not British, just Europhiles with a little bit of punk rock mixed in! Riefer - it's not too bad with the window in the bedroom, as we don't watch a lot of TV, that's not an issue, more of a problem for us is the coffee grinder in the morning! We ended up getting a manual grinder that is much quieter so it doesn't disturb the late sleeper.
Beautiful bikes! First thing I focused on. Great use of space overall, bravo!
Love the Unionjack, the living room colours! Bedroom looks so cosy! But the high chairs are a little bulky at the bottom. And they're in the corridor? I will most likely trip on them while passing by.
Such a great apartment! Question: those adorable Edison bulbs hanging over the breakfast bar, where did you get them and how are they connected? It looks like you have the cord running along the ceiling and around the corner? Thanks :)
Jaggae - the bar stools are in the hall, but the hall is about 5' wide there, so we do not really have an issue with tripping over the stools. In fact, before we put the bar up, it felt oddly empty and like a huge waste of space!
BethAlexandra - we purchased the Edison bulbs from an antiques store here in town that has a specialty antique bulb booth (though you can purchase them online too). We then put them into some Ikea Hemma fixtures and ran the cords down to an outlet on the lower floor that is controlled by a switch next to the bar (go figure...), so we can just flip them on and off via the switch.
love your british wall! did you hand painted it? amazing skill!
Love your sitting area. Yellow wall, green couch, fuchsia accents, and those curtains: swoon! Great taste must run in your family. :)
very nice floor plan !
