What I Love About My Small Home:
The thing I love best about living in a small home is that it’s a way for me to leave a smaller footprint on planet Earth. My house uses fewer resources – less water, less electricity, fewer materials. At the same time, with only 900 square feet, I am better able to afford to choose furnishings and finishes that I truly love. It becomes possible to invest in quality over quantity. I also like the challenge of figuring out how to fit my belongings and evolving space needs into two bedrooms, one bathroom, one living space, a kitchen, and three closets (and a tiny porch and carport). I’ve found that it’s possible to live very comfortably within these confines.
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
• Pick a color palette and stick to it. It will make the whole house feel more spacious and cohesive.
• Make the most of vertical space. I had a carpenter build simple board and bracket shelves for me. Corners and just below the ceiling are good spots to claim more room.
• The difference is in the details. Carefully consider each item that becomes part of your décor. Does it have a purpose? And to quote from Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, “Does it spark joy within you”?
