Named Hotel of the Year for 2010 by Tatler and Best Resort for 2010 by the Travel and Leisure Design Awards, the newest incarnation of the La Mamounia hotel in Marrakech is one gorgeous getaway. The makeover project (completed last year) was designed by Jacques Garcia. Originally built in the 20s by a French architect, Garcia's plan for the hotel was a return to the rich craftsmanship of classic Moroccan style. While some of the Art Deco details remain, Garcia reimagined the hotel, adding in the craftwork Morocco is known for: chiseled plasters, painted wood and mosaics. The combination of the two strong styles creates a heady, romantic vision of 30s travel, a perfect setting for a design lovers escape.
