Most bedrooms are twice the size but don't offer near as much sex appeal (black floors) combined with a neutral softness that would attract both genders. Lots of big ideas for such a small space, let's break them down after the jump.
Lighting Isis (of Paper Flower Girl) does a fabulous job of keeping the space open and airy. She does this with sheer curtains hung effortlessly with a wire and clips. The daintiness of the hardware lends to the overall softness and charm that this bedroom is chock-full of. Next up--a pair of overhead lights in place of a headboard save floor space but allow for reading in bed.
Hooks and shelving Hooks by the door offer a spot for a robe, towel or night gown to land when not in use. Thin shelving at the foot of the bed gives Isis the chance to display family photos and adds to the room's personality.
Chair and bedside table A vintage church chair is another spot for "in between clothing" to land and an old sewing machine in its case gets repurposed as a nightstand. It's the perfect size for this bedroom, sliding right between the wall and the bed.
Flooring In a room full of neutrals, the shiny black floor pops and adds just the right combo of sexy and chic that we love.

oh please, let's not nitpick! the bedroom looks great in those neuter (sic) colors. ;) i wouldn't have thought to mix grays and browns, but it works beautifully here, and the bold prints on the bed add interest without overwhelming the room.
The pillows create pop and in a small space, it's a splash of design or color that can be easily rearranged. Using ANY shade related to the colors in the room works, so brings the possibility of variety to a small space. I'd also suggest varying textures of materials for interest: needlepoint pillows vs silk, for example.
Its not as sophisticated, but I really like my own tiny 60 some square foot bedroom: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mnerd/4357763146/in/set-72157612545575480/
This is pretty great too.....and we use lots of the same techniques. I have the photo ledges and the wall attached reading lamps too.
Where are the lights above the headboard from. Thanks
Yes Ladymantle, let's not nitpick. Gender has more than just the grammatical meaning; why do you think universities have Gender Studies departments? In people, gender refers to something a bit more complicated and subtle than just what's in between your legs.
Let's play a game called "What Can't AT Commenters Complain About?". It's off to a rousing (and annoying) start!
Anyway, I looooove the black floors. Sexy indeed.
I'll complain about the grammar & the unmade bed, but not the color scheme & lovely pillows.
Very nice. Love that it looks great even with an unmade bed. It's tough to pull that off, which is why my bedroom will never be featured on AT. I only worry that the artwork on the lower ledge may get (ahem) kicked off the wall at some point.
this is stunning. i don't mind which gender or sex people associate with this room ... because it is just stunning. the muted tones and softness of it are just .... makes me want to reclaim my own tiny tiny bedroom. (thanks for the inspiration!!)
Love the paint color used in the room. Does anyone know the name of it?
OF COURSE you can use "gender" to refer to people! a much better (more scientifically correct) word for "sex" in medical, social and other contexts...
No way- an unmade bed is the best. Meticulously-made beds repel me because they seem so rigid and offputting... much like the experience of dating an engineer.
Unmade bed = sexy times ahead!
LOVE this post. My bedroom is tiny too. Probably even less than 64sqft.
I like all the different browns and grays, and the shelving looks nice too... but I just gotta say it... I can't stand unmade beds either. It really hits a raw nerve with me here on AT. And no, I'm not wound that tight :) It detracts from the actual design esthetic by looking messy, but most of all it's just waaaaaay too personal. Same thing with freshly slept on pillows - it just drives me nuts.
Okay - I'm done :)
I really like those pillows. Where are they from? Or did you make them?
I'm not sure about the sex appeal, it just looks drab and cluttered to me. Maybe if the bed was made, I'd like it more but it just looks like it needs a nice bright wall paint or something to brighten it up :-)
I hate to be a downer, but this room seems very depressing to me. The colors, the unmade bed (which normally doesn't bother me in posts), the institutional feel...it all just doesn't evoke any feelings of serenity and love, which I think is necessary in a bedroom. Sad.
We have been living in this home for about six months now. Not one of the rooms is completely finished. The mirror in the bedroom still needs to be attached to the wall, we still have to find the perfect pendant lamp, I want to add a upholstered headboard some time as well...
To answer some of your questions:
*The pillows are from ikea, orla kiely, and hema (a dutch brand).
*The lamps are from Massive (a Belgian brand).
*The paint is a mix of two shades of gray from the 101-woonideeën line (Dutch brand).
Personally I couldn't care less about a made bed. There or only 24 hours in a day, and when I can spare 5 minutes with making the bed.
Oh :) and nothing nasty with frames falling of the bottom shelve has happened so far, LOL.
Ha! I should have seen straight away that this is a typical Amsterdam bedroom in an apartment from, let's say, the 1930's... Is it, Isis? Anyway, very nicely done! Beautiful room, love the overhead lights especially.
Thea (Amsterdam)
hi thea!
it's in alphen :) but you were close :P
We are getting ready to move into our dream apartment. We will definitely be challenged to have space for everything, but this gorgeous (just my taste) bedroom is so inspiring?
I would die for those bed linens. Any idea where the comforter is from?
hi amanda!
all my bed linens come from either IKEA or HEMA. the set with the retro stem pattern is from IKEA, as is the brown matrass cover. i don't think you can get HEMA products in the US, though.
best of luck with the move!
I'm reminded of Bette Davis in Beyond the Forest. The colors are nice, though, and too bad about the Euro-only Hema linens.
Thanks for posting this! I keep going back to it... it's going to be an inspiration for my new bedroom :)
Thanks so much for the info, isis! You've done such a great job. I really am enamored by this room. My boyfriend is even really digging the feel of your room.
Thanks for the inspiration, as well as good wishes! Best regards.
Frankly, I have no idea what this bedroom looks like. Thanks for all the vignettes.
Kellylc you are hilarious. Lovely room:) Seems very calming.
Very nice.
Reminds me of the bedroom in the movie 'Barefoot in the Park' - only much more comfy!
I call this Youth Hostel Chic. It's a little too nice to be a real hostel, but a little too drab to be a motel. Somewhere in the mid point is Youth Hostel Chic.
Love it; very sexy!
This is probably the furthest thing from my idea of a sexy bedroom... but to each their own. Cute pillows.
I wish there were bigger pictures instead of so many vignettes, because it's hard to imagine what the entire room (and layout) looks like. But it does look depressing from what I can see -- perhaps the shots don't do it justice?
I love the idea, and it all looks great but - where are the dressers?! I always have enough room when planning out space - until I reach the dressers. so sure, it's easy to make a small room work when you leave out a main space-taker-upper!
love the whole room! definitely sexy. our bedroom is a little larger, but we still need to figure out how to squeeze a closet in there, so we may have to use these solutions as inspiration!

It’s both sweet and sexy. And a little musky. I’m really drawn to this space.
As much as I love the careful use of color, this room is a little TOO neutral for me as well. I applaud the careful well executed design, though.
But unlike Kellylc, I find the unmade bed 'off-putting'. It speaks to me of someone with a general lack of interest in hygeine. However, maybe being married to an engineer has made me 'rigid', but I never thought that the only place for 'sexy times' was a bed, made or otherwise!
I used to have a bedroom that was about 9' x 9' (and it had a king size bed in it!) There was no dresser in this room (positively no room for that) and I did do one of those shallow shelves on one side. It was nearly impossible to take pictures of this room (at least with my simple camera it was) except in "vignettes."
I really like this room!
It's everything I believe a bedroom should be: It's to the owner's liking (most important thing) and it's not too cluttered or has a bajillion bright colors to drive you insane. I bet you can crawl into bed and feel super comfy and calm.
Nice job!
I find this bedroom boring. I don't find it sexy and don't understand how that is used as a descriptor here. The whole thing is just blah.
As a matter of fact I'd like to crawl into that bed right now and take a nap.
Or something.
Small bedrooms are so comfy. I suppose mine is even smaller. http://www.flickr.com/photos/60560457@N06/5520788456/ (Caution! it's not midcentury! or even contemporary :)
Beautiful bedroom in which to take a nap on a rainy-grey-sky Sunday. As it is such a small room, you were absolutely right to go with dark neutrals.
However, I would personnaly add some hints of color to bring a little more 'life' and interest to the room. A bright pink or some coral/tangerine would work a treat! It could be added by putting a small vase of such color on your shelves and then carry the same colour through with two or three other items (a scarf hanging from the hook, a smaller coloured pillow on the bed, etc)
But nice job anyway!
it's always a bit weird when i see only the responses to a deleted post. someone was nitpicky, i take it?
does anyone know what paint was used on the floor? i love it.
great room too, btw
I love the waaay to personal...can't have that. I think it's lovely. But after all the typical decorator comments, I think I'll just light some incense and go throw up. Lighten up.
